Wow been 20 years already. I'm a big fan of the Hit Man,and watching the two of his greatest opponents go at it was quite entertaining. Though neither have the knockout power of Hearns, their skills in many ways rival his. Like Hagler's ploy against Hearns. Styles make fights I guess. My thoughts? Hagler landed the harder shots but Leonard fought a brilliant fight by out foxing the Marvelous one.Hearns fought Hagler's fight and Hagler fought Leonard's. But then later on Hearns got Revenge on Leonard so most of us believe.Hagler and Leonard still lack the excitement of the knockout power of the hit man though.:happy

Hagler lost clearly (by at least a two round margin). I've seen the fight many times and have never scored it any differently.

    116-112: SRL.

this thing with styles is a fallacy. The reason this fight turned out the way it did was because Hagler slowed down enough for leonard to keep up with as you might expect from any fighter who folled up by retiring. Dont forget that Leonard tried this ploy before after Hagler's match with Duran except that Ray cut his own comeback short.

This wasnt the Hagler I knew from years before, the Hagler that both Hearns and Leonard shied away from for years. People forget that Tommy ducked out of that fight. In fact he did it twice claiming two different reasons. And Leonard just plain wouldn't fight him. Both of them knew it meant certain disaster just like that beating Marvin gave Tommy in 3 rounds.

But even that wasn't the same Marvin I remember ripping apart faces with his right jab and hook. People talk about Ray Leonard having a great jab. Ray Leonard had a GOOD jab. Tommy's was even better. But Marvin had the kind that cuts deep.

Whom Ray Leonard ever cut in a fight???? He needed about a hundred blows to do it and I still havent seen him cut hardly anyone. Marvin would be doing it with one or two punches like he did with Tony Sibson.

Imagine Leonard taking that same punch in the ring getting cut up. He'd **** in his pants. I'm not saying Rays going to take all the punches that Hamsho took but he wouldnt be able to take it nearly as well because Hagler was an explosive puncher and that's what Ray was afraid of for so long.

And likewise Tommy was in bad shape for the leonard rematch. Just one fight before with Kinchen the comments were that Tommy was realy just a four round fighter...and that was before he got floored. Honestly, I don't think I ever saw Tommy look as bad as I saw him in that fight. Not the Medal fight, or with Dewitt, or Andries. Not even Juan Roldan although you could see his chin crumbling already.

So I wouldn't exactly say Tommy got revenge on leonard. The draw was about right. Tommy scored two knockdowns and leonard cancelled them out on the scorecards because he put tommy in trouble.

Had that fight took place two years earlier Tommy would have taken a clear decision and the fight wouldn't have been as difficult. had it taken place two years before that Tommy would have knocked Ray out.

Career wise and prime for prime Leonard was a very good fighter but he was no Hagler.

I had Hagler winning 115-113. Think the boxing world has to just agree to disagree on this one. One of the most controversial decisions of all time. Very close fight between two fighters who should have fought each other 3-4years earlier.

You're spot on of course, Leonard proved himself a class above. Hagler's on the next shelf tho, top fighter for a long period.

I score it 7-5 Leonard every time. I'm far more of a Hagler fan and would love to view him as winning it, but no way for me. He just didn't do enough.

You're wacked out as usual. Ray leonard was nowhere near the level that marvin showed in his prime. Notice I said "prime"??

Hagler wasn't past his prime when he lost a decision but shot. Even so, to me neither man won clear cut so that presents a problem for ray Leonard getting bragging rights over Hagler. he can't say he beat Hagler. He can say Hagler was slow that night. He can say hagler was lethargic, sluggish, easy to hit, had no timing, lacked a punch, etc.

Even if someone could mistake enough even rounds in Leonard's favor to give him the fight, it was hardly a victory. this was not a Norris-Leonard type victory where all doubt has been removed.

It's actually insulting to compare a Ray Leonard to a prime Hagler who was so dominant that Ray refused to come out of hiding during his best years!!!

He only came out for Marvin's worst performances and Tommy's worst performances.

I 've scored this fight numerous times, having Hagler by 2 rounds, sometimes by 3. The fawning for the judges and grandstanding while not detracting to me do not count as effective aggression.

Hagler won the fight by three or four rounds. Hagler threw more punches, according to punchstat landed a roughly equivalent amount (Leonard was in survival mode most of the night and proved at times a difficult target), and had a lot more stem on his shots (he had Leonard hurt a few times). Hagler was the aggressor, effectively so for a majority of the rounds. Clearly Hagler wasn't the same fight he was a few years earlier, but he had more than enough left in him to win the fight. He was robbed.

."People forget that Tommy ducked out of that fight. In fact he did it twice claiming two different reasons."

Hearns fell and 'broke" his little finger while jogging. Fight cancelled.

Hagler said: "For the kind of money we will make for fighting, I would have them cut my finger off."
