Saw Roy Jones Jr vs Antonio Tarver 1 for the first time and wasn't what I thought it was.

Got to remember RJJ had lost like 5 of his last 110 rounds and cleaned out the division. Winning 3 rounds in this situation made Tarver RJJs clear would be successor. Harding had also won 3 rounds against RJJ and Tarver had beat him.

It was a 7-5 fight. Tarver had the better work and was the aggressor, but deserved the loss fo not throwing enough.

 

I had it quite close with Jones pulling it out in the end. There was a rematch as, at the time, Jones was seen as pretty much untouchable and had never really been in a close fight. As it was, Tarver 1 saw the last remains of the old Roy Jones - and the last time we saw him still operating at elite level. I think, because of the way the trilogy unfolded, people often forget that he gutted it out in this one ie he beat Tarver and he did it while on the decline - a decline that would continue and was precipitous. It's a pity he did not see the writing on the wall and retire at this point.

 

I’m sure your fringe scorecard is worth more than the majority decision that the judges handed in and the rematch was therefore pointless.

 

I had Jones winning that one too. I really wish he had retired after that

 

Only watched it once amd had it something like 8-4 for Jones. Nothing that would normally warrant an immediate rematch, but just the fact that Jones was in a competitive fight was enough considering how dominant he'd been up to that point.

 

I had Jones by two, but he looked awful. Considering hoe dominant he’d been going into that fight, the fact that it was close on the cards raised more than a few eyebrows.

 

True. Part of the problem was that he mismanaged his money too. Hence all the late career fights and the losses that came with them

 

It was a fair decision. Tarver lost too many rounds by spending so much time in the middle of the ring, doing little, perhaps hurt or leery from Roy’s body shots.
