I was reading a book the other day in WH Smith, something about "a sporting year around the world" or something. Anyway, for Boxing(Marquis of Queensbury) they had a HW title fight in Las Vegas as the one to go to. Fair enough. Then under information and links: they had the big 4's websites...:patsch
1. Lazy writing and research by the author :nono
2. Not gonna help at all someone who knows FA about boxing...

So my question is...if someone wants to get into boxing, where do they go?

As we all know, boxing isn't the easiest sport to get into and understand the workings of. There are far too many governing bodies, promoters etc. Unless you have a friend/relation who is into it, its not something that you can get into easily.
If you live in a small-ish town, (even a big one) there can often be a local guy known as a "champ" or the local boxer. Often its just a bpuncer who is pretty ****ing shite but has a following and people believe he is great...
There is a place for unlicensed boxing but often people do not get it and understand that this person is little more than a joke.

The websites that helped get me into it are the ones below...but it took me ****ing ages

So where to go??
- ESB? - Brit Forum good but lots of **** news stories these days im afraid
-The Scene? - lots of news stories, but a horrible looking site, looks cheap, nasty and cluttered.
- BBC? - ****ing shite coverage, articles with mistakes very often, ignoring large fights
- Britishboxin.net - used to be good a few years ago I think, then it just stopped being updated...
- BBBofC - website aint up to much either. I know the BBBofC is mainly run by an older generation...could this be an issue?
- Seconds out - yeah...ok but again very cluttered, too many icons, links etc
- The ring - I'll be honest, I rarely go on it, so I don't know

Individual promoters sites aren't the place to start, they only showcase their own.
There are countless others with ****, **** articles on them that i wont even mention but you know what I mean...

Just to confirm- you mean get into boxing as a fan, rather than start fighting?

If so I think ESB is a great place. You can't get away with spouting bull**** here without getting called up for it. A magazine or news article can claim anything without having to worry about getting exposed, so to speak

really?

I can back this up if need be. The truth can only set you free, I'm just telling it like it is, its for the best, I'm not sugar-coating any bull**** and I would think that whoever is in charge would appreciate that

As a new fan squire, yeah. Even on SkySportsNews, they only cover fights they have themselves, they will ignore Carl Froch etc if they aint on the channel. Disgraceful stuff. If you believed SSN all the time, they would have you believe there is nothing more important that the Premiership and the Champ League in sport.

Now bunceys boxing hour covered all, (as it still does on the radio), even though I think it may have had a slight skew towards Setanta covered-events.

boxing news' weekly mag worked pretty good for me-
i have used esb for some time now and find it slightly biased and 'owned' by the regulars,,still good fun though!.
just post once or twice a month as opposed to every day.
not so good for encouraging someone to 'get in' to boxing.

Boxing is a strange sport to get into now you mention it. Anyone wanting to get into football here only has to watch MOTD, read the papers for the multiple league tables, find a full set of fixtures online and they know exactly what is going on. Trying to get a sense of the wider picture of boxing is like putting a jigsaw together

For information purposes I refer to boxrec a lot, Ring rankings at times but mostly ESB. A new fan would do well to at least have an awareness of these sites.

The scene is an awful layout but its the best place for news and gossip.

ESB front page is horrific. check this article http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=24892&more=1

yeah, boxing news is great, i subscribe. I have to say, its updated less often than most, but their website is definitely good and worth a look. Of course i can't tell you what it is or whats on it...but I can confirm it is good...is that allowed danny? :yikes

Boxing monthly I'm also a big fan of...I just wish it was more than monthly...or a bit bigger but I guess they have found what works for the market demand.
