think back prior to Mosley they were talking about Matthew Hatton, before Ortiz they were saying Mallignaggi. Before every Mayweather fight get confirmed agaisnt a quality opponent theres **** mentioned. Its all about getting the fighters name out there. As much as Floyd would like an easy pay day he knows Cotto, Alvarez and Manny double the pay.
Well, to be fair, you can't expect him to just sit around and do nothing. If there are money-making opportunities available and fights that the public will eventually accept (Cotto, Alvarez, and even a shitty Guerrero), he'd be mad not to make them happen.
When he was talking about half the 154 division boxing his ears off, I think he was talking about Alvarez. Not Mayweather.
:deal Alvarez is the best non-TR opponent but isn't ready and brings nothing stylistically to the table and gasses out because his weight cut is ridiculous.
Sergio Martinez is the Middleweight champion, Mayweather is the Welterweight champion....that came up from Super Feather.
But can you logically state a way that Mayweather and Martinez can fight and its fair for both fighters?
if it isnt pacquiao i really just couldnt care a less yes alvarez or even cotto would make for a mouth watering matchup but it still isnt the fight that boxing ultimately needs to happen now before it completely falls into the "past their prime" category showdown
Not really. But for Mayweather it's a huge opportunity to win the middleweight championship - he could look at it like that. I'm not saying he should, and I wouldn't accuse him of ducking if he didn't take it on. Hagler never fought Michael Spinks after all...... The 147 and 154 divisions pretty much suck unfortunately, so whoever he fights not named Pacquiao or Martinez (or maybe Cotto) he's gonna take some **** for it. That's just the way it is. Pacquiao is much the same, his realistic options are Marquez or Mayweather.
And Martinez came up from Welter :deal Very selective in your criteria here Rob! Floyd is about as natural a Welter as you'll find. He was still young at super feather and growing. Jose Napoles WAS a genuine Lightweight who moved up to Welter, was undersized and became champion. He then went to middle to fight Monzon, who was taller and as big as Martinez. This isn't unprecedented. Sergio would probably have a stone or so on Floyd. Same as Canelo, who weighed in at 168 for his last fight IIRC. I imagine Floyd doesn't lose hardly any weight to make Welter, but would still be in good nick at just over 11 stone. That may be spurious, but I am just speculating. It won't happen, Sergio is fighting Macklin not long before, but Martinez is the best non-TR opponent IMO. Fair for both? Take the risk to get the acclaim. I'm sure Martinez would be willing to cut to 155 to make the fight happen,I doubt it'll change much in terms of what he'll weigh on the night, so, pretty insignificant IMO. If Floyd was willing to fight Marquez (never fought over 135 at the time) and Guerrero was mooted (same as JMM) then why isn't Floyd expected to do the same? I think Floyd will beat Sergio handily, his straight right will land well and he has the faster feet to stay out of harms way. Little issues for him there IMO and he'd get a lot of credit for the win.
