Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, is planning to approach HBO and Showtime with the idea of staging a tournament at 147-pounds. Schaefer plans to have conversations next week with HBO and Showtime, regarding a tournament involving 4 to 8 welterweight fighters.

Some of the fighters involved could include Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Lucas Matthysse, Marcos Maidana, Amir Khan, and others in the Golden Boy stable who are fighting from 140 to 147-pounds. Khan is a longshot to be involved and the tournament would likely take place in a single-elimination format.

Schaefer is also open to involving fighters who are not promoted by Golden Boy, like IBF champion Andre Berto.

"I'm going to have conversations next week with HBO and Showtime to seewhat we could put together. Four or maybe eight [fighters]," Schaefer said. "Maidana has already indicated that he would be open to big fights at 147. Matthysee would be willing to go up for big fights."

"Maybe we could do something where four fighters go against each other one weekend and next four could go against each other the next weekend, and then have the winners fight each other in three months."

If a network jumps on board, Schaefer would like to start the tournament as early as January.

Tbf, I think Paulie, Alexander and the two Argentinians would make a great little tournament (though Paulie-Alexander would be held in snoozeville). Maybe the winner could face Khan (presumably he would have a 147 belt by then).

    Mike Jones Vs Victor Ortiz
    Amir Khan Vs Andre Berto

Maidana at Matthyse should stay at 140, with Khan and Bradley likely to move up very soon, it'll be them, Guerrero and Morales (who am I missing? No one? Good) so they should go for it.

The above is perfect and gives Floyd a viable opponent 18 months down the line when he fights again.

EDIT: Is Mike Jones with Top Rank? Oh, well, Ortiz Vs Bailey is a suitable replacement.

Wow, seems a good idea. Although I'm not sure Khan, Mattysse, Alexander and Paulie are legit WWs.
