Years ago while growing up, I noticed that Schmeling wasn't given proper credit, with that dark cloud of Nazism still floating over him. He was seen as the evil "mad scientist" who concocted an unfair knockout win over a green, unprepared Louis. Years later, it seems that Max wasn't really a Nazi at all, just a German citizen, and actually shielded two young Jewish boys in his apartment, which is more thjan many people can claim. Also, Louis wasn't really that "green", being since in two masterful performances he thrashed Max Baer and Primo Carnera, and this was prior to the Schmeling bout. Max has been deserving of credit for a long time for his great victory over Louis. When everyone else was shitting in their britches before the first bell when fighting Louis, Schmeling calmly carried out his strategy and brilliantly too it may be said. That was his high water mark, although he had other worthy victories as well, like over Stibling and Walker. Also was his revenge victory over Steve Hamas. It can be argued that he was robbed the 2nd time out against Sharkey, and that if he wasn't screwed out of a shot at the title against Braddock, IMO, he would have been too much for Braddock, and won the title an unprecented 2nd time. I believe he would have methodically wotn down, and busted uip the Cinderella Man for a 13th or 14th round tko, and the title would have gone to the Third Reich. I don't think anything could have saved him from that inevitable beating that Louis had in store for him, however. Overall, I'd say Max was a bit better than the other guys who succeeded him as champion in that interim time before Louis. Max Baer, however, is an exception, in that I think he had Schmeling's number.
Yeah, after WWII he became the Coca-Cola man in Germany and run there business over here. Made good money but he also gave a lot away for charity and such things.
