Toss up for me. Gun to my head 51-49 Schmeling, so he gets the vote

Schmeling had the power of the accurate right hand that may stop Ken from charging in but Ken was strong going forward when there wasn't power in front of him .
This would not be an easy fight for either man but if Max can tap the tipping point and back Ken up with his power he has a good chance of stopping Ken if not Ken builds momentum

Norton all day for mine. Max lacked the physical strength to handle Norton and I believe Max’s power is overrated here. Schmeling hit Louis over and over again with that right and it took Schmeling 12 rounds of beating the Brown Bomber up to finish him.

Did Max actually ever one punch kayo a world class heavyweight ?

Sharkey and Baer handles his so called power with no problems at all.

When you examine Max’s records it’s pretty unconvincing apart from his one moment of glory vs Louis.

Schmeling didn’t actually have that many fights against the top men, his record is stacked with European level heavyweights.

    Cheers All.

Schmeling had a dynamite right hand. One of the most underrated in the division’s history. Case in point he was only man to stop Joe Louis until his last career fight. He was the only man to stop Young Stribling in over 200 career bouts for Stribling. He was only one of two men to stop the extremely active Johnny Risko during his 10 year prime. Only man to also stop #1 contender Steve Hamas. Also stopped the hyped up Walter Neusal. Only guy to stop (and did it easily in a mismatch) Mickey Walker at heavy.
The reason he didn’t stop Sharkey in the rematch is Sharkey fought the entire rematch off the back foot retreating but take one look at his eye by the end of that fight and you know Max was doing damage.
If you attacked Max in a straight line or tried to brawl his timing and accuracy was a nightmare (Risko, Walker, Uzcudon (who he couldn’t stop in 3tries), all paid heavy price.
Norton on the other hand is bigger physically and much more all around a complete fighter than most of those opponents and fights we’ll moving forward. Schmeling doesn’t have the size or aggression to make Norton go backwards. It’s a good fight - I rate Schmeling above Norton but H2h it’s pick em fight for me

Max was stiff in the hips and didn't have a lateral game. He gets pummeled from all angles by the better specimen in Norton. There was a time very early and very late in Kenny's career when he could be caught but not in his prime, not by Max.

Max Baer also said that Schmeling could really hit with his right hand. He said once Schmeling hit him, and for about a round he was seeing three Schmeling's in front of him.

I do not think Max handles that oddball jab and it makes him very uncomfortable. That's just part of it===the cause and effect is it leaves him open for that 2 handed body punching from Norton. And he never solves the Norton style & gets worn out from the viscious body attack
