Baers best performance. Too much dirty backhanding and rule bending for my taste. If they fought again can Baer rise to the occasion and repeat that performance or does the meticulously prepared Schmeling go back to the drawing board and bring a new game plan. For what it's worth I'd go with Schmeling !
I think it's a matter of style and size. Baer was bigger and his round-house right hand would always be a problem for Max S. This assumes Baer brings his same game to the second fight, which can be easily doubted on the basis of his post-Carnera fights. But I think before he became champion, he was motivated, and THAT Baer would likely defeat Schmeling again. Not that Baer deserves a higher place in the fistic firmament generally. He just had the style and physique to handle Schmeling.
Schmeling was over trained and stale for Baer. Usually if your stopped in one fight it’s difficult to actually win a return. Here I could see Schmeling turning the trick. He was the greater fighter.
Baer beats his @ss like he did the first time. When baer was on game and was as motivated as he was against schmeling he was a killer, and I really dont see why this forum ranks schmeling so highly.
Schmeling fought a god-awful fight against Baer. He tried to outslug the bigger and stronger man. When he had success it was when he boxed Baer. He could totally have won a rematch.
Again Schmeling caused a sensation when he came to the US in the late 20’s. He was a leading contender or hwt champion between 1928-1938. He was a great fighter.
