I don’t know If Schmeling’s counter punching ability will help him here. Sonny Liston had one of the best left jabs of all time along with a big reach advantage over schmeling. And Max didn’t have the chin to survive that kind of power either. All respect to Max Schmeling but this might be a mismatch.
Depends on if Max sees something. Could be such a brilliant boxer, but his chin was not his strongest asset.

His chin seemed pretty sturdy in the Baer fight, as well as the first Louis fight. Had his back not shattered in the rematch I could see him taking more punishment from Joe.
Max had the accurate right hand counter that eventually spelled doom for Louis. That's precisely the punch to which Liston was most vulnerable. Therefore I give Schmeling a slim chance of kayoing Sonny.
