As the title says, the 1936 Louis-Schmeling fight overlaid with Claim McCarthy's blow by blow analysis. The recording I obtained was only for rounds 1,2,4,7,9,11,12 so 5 rounds are missing. Will redo it once I find the entire recording. Footage is the clearest one I have found of the fight, full HD you can see them raising their eyebrows. Link for the full fight is in the description. More great work Pedro. I always found this win underrated in a few ways. Louis wasn't as green as many think, and in fact arguably his best performance had happened already against Baer. Schmeling's win is pretty damn legit.
Just before his match with Max he had kod Baer, Uzcudun and Reztlaff, all rather easily, and right after his fight with Max he ended Sharkey's comeback in 3 rounds and kod Al Ettore in 5. This was the fighter Max Schmeling defeated and that was no fluke. Max is simply so underrated that most people would sooner think Louis was uncharacteristically weakened for this match due to undertraining or arrogance but a somewhat undertrained Louis is still one of the worst fighters to go up against and Schmeling broke him down methodically and finished him. No lucky punch.
Are there other instances where Louis would show up undertrained and dominate anyway? Surely he wasn’t too much of a workhorse against some of his lesser opponents. I also never got the ‘Schmeling only won cuz Louis dropped his hand after jabbing, he never beats prime Louis’. That’s something Louis did against almost everyone except for Schmeling in the rematch, and he usually got away with it with his exceptional parrying, shoulder roll and all around defensive abilities. The only problem is that he was fighting Max Schmeling. Max was the only one good enough to take advantage of such a small error, and Joe’s error played into Schmeling’s strengths. Great fight.
The guys he fought during the so called bum a month tour couldn't have been prepared for accordingly, not in one month. I'll assume the same goes for Conn. Pretty much. Not even Walcott could land his right as frequently and as accurately as Max did. Schmeling had the blend of speed, angles and timing that made his right difficult to deny. Exactly. Louis throwing everything at him in the rematch from the get go is actually a compliment!
