I have good footage of "Schmeling-Walker" on tape....... Why was this match made? Poor Mick Walker was heavy at close to 170 BLOATED pounds, while "Mad" Max Schmeling was fit at his weight of 190+ or - pounds..... The hell was team Walker thinking here? Max Schmeling toyed with Walker before kayoing his ass with ease somewhere near or at the 8th round..... A mismatch.......

Both were headed for a title shot, Walker was ranked number 3rd at the time of the fight with Schmeling.

Schmeling needed to knock Walker out of the way, people seem to forget that Walker was relly tearing though the divsion until the Schmeling fight.

Walker at 170+ pounds was a bloated man. Yes, he had skill, but he wasn't going far against real good 190 pounders back in the early 30s....... M.S. kicked Walker's ass HARD!

Then why did he take a 'real good 190lber' in Jack Sharkey to a draw? Sharkey was arguably better than schmeling. Walker also beat 6'2 210lb heavyweight contender Bearcat Wright and ranked contenders johnny risko and paolino uzcuden. Both weighed 195lb. Walker was legit man. He may have been a shrimp, but he earned his spot atop the heavvyweight rankings.

I know Walker had balls and skills.... HE DID! But, he was NOT a real heavy...........

As for Jackson Shark, well, he was good, but not a truly greatly skilled fighter.......... I think Max Schmeling was technically and physically better despite his fouls against Shark in circa---'32....

Walker only fought heavies cuz of the dough he was being offered.... His conditioning was not good when bloated......

Forgot about Sharkey?? Risko?? Uzcudun??? Levinsky???

Walker was gunning for a title shot and all these men failed at the hands of Walker. Well Sharkey got the draw, but still.

Sharkey defeated schmeling for the title on points..and was beating the **** out of him in the first fight before the foul. So how is it that you say Sharkey was not as a good?

Sharkey also was beating up Jack Dempsey for 6 rounds, and pummeled Harry Wills and George Godfrey, two top heavyweights of the generation tunney and dempsey avoided.

Jack Sharkey could do everything on film. He has one of the better resumes in heavyweight history. He is without a doubt one of the top ring technicians in heavyweight history. Sharkey was a great fighter.

Bill, tell me who looks like the better skilled fighter here. Schmeling or Sharkey?

Shark's KO loss to Carnera in '33 was pretty sketchy........ Shark was also known to be a lazy trainer in camp....... He often had some blubber in the girth area.......

You have yet to back up your reason why schmeling was a more "skilled" fighter than sharkey. Because both film and resume debunks your theory. You first said Walker couldn't handle fighting a "very good 190lber" which has since been exposed since we pointed out he fought 15 dead even rounds with Jack Sharkey. You can't call Max Schmeling very good, and not put Jack Sharkey on the same pedesatal. Those two fighters are linked together.

ps Sharkey got blubber around 1932 or so. If you watch him on film vs Dempsey in 27, he is rock solid all muscle.

The rematch of Schmeling-Sharkey was somewhat different...most think Max won that fight..and that he was the more aggressive and effective of the two.

Mickey Walker is the only former Welterweight Champion to to rated in the Top 10 in the Heavyweight Division. He was a Great fighter, one of the best. Years ago, when I was a kid, they told all us kids that Rocky Graziano was coming to an affair in Paterson, not far from where I lived. They also said that another boxer would attend, BUT they didn't know his name. I came early with several of my friends and we sit in the 1st row. I had a large picture of Rocky and I wanted him to sign it. We waited about an hour and then Rocky came through the door along with the other boxer, Mickey Walker. I got so excited, I gave the picture of Rocky to one of my friends and ran all the way home and came back with a picture of Walker. Both of them signed their pictures. It was Great and I thought I was in heaven. Years later, I met both of them again and even became pretty friendly with both, especially Mickey. He use to come to a lot of the Veteran Boxing meetings and affairs along with Freddie Red Cochrane and Tippy Larkin. In the end, it was pretty sad, as he was really losing it.

    Suzie,

Shark was a fit man in '27 at age 25............ Come the '30s, with money rolling in, Shark was NOT as dedicated to training........ He was different by then......... Shark was washed up come the '33 loss to Carnera....... The '36 bout with Joseph Louis was a "Money" thing.......... Shark had NO chance there.......... He was also 204 slobbish pounds, too...... Cheers......

Well, Charles lost 2 bouts in a row just months before he boxed Rocky, OK he did come back with 2 wins between. Olson lost to Sands just 5 months before he fought Robinson. Al McCoy lost his last 2 fights and 5 out of his last 8 before he fought Louis. This happened a lot back then.
