I've seen his fight with Tommy Hearns and the loss to Virgil Hill and that's it. I know he got smoked by Charles Williams and he lost important fights to Iran Barkley and James Shuler (rip).

Seems like a tough, crafty guy who had a spotty record and couldn't be counted on in his biggest fights.

For those who watched him during his career, how would you compare him to guys like contenders in other eras like Tony Mundine Sr., Howard Eastman, Quincy Taylor, or Martin Murray?

Good all around skills. Good power. Very good chin.

    Seemed to lack fire

Could be too sective with his punches.

Best weight may have been 168 but was past prime by the time he moved up.

For starters, his surname is Kinchen.

He was a very good fighter and can see him being comparable and in some cases even better to the contenders listed in the OP. I remember in 1989 a friend of mine and I were watching the Virgil Hill vs James Kinchen match. I told my friend it would go the distance. I couldn’t have been more wrong. But he was a solid fighter no doubt. His bout with James Schuler was a good one too.

General wisdom was he dried out for a time in order to make 160, and might have been better at 168. Dunno. He showed grit, good skills and an iron chin against Hearns, that's for sure.

His KO of Alex Ramos was just brutal to watch. I really thought he'd maimed him.

    Kinchen. Now you're schooled.
