Which is perhaps why he still has all his marbles, a career and a healthy bank balance??

He is one of those fighters where you need to see a highlight reel to appreciate him rather than watching a full fight.

Is this not a perferct example thought of the sweet science. Hit and not be hit.

All depends on which type of boxing fan you are. I marvell at the skills of some of the mot cautious fighters over the years, Wlad, Floyd..... was Nelson a similar mould, but no one really takes the cruiserweight division too seriously therefore he never really got the publicity or credit he deserves??

Only speculating, really only ever seen one or two highlight reels. Going to dig a few out tonight.

On ringside - love watching Barrys old fights but as a presenter he gets on my tit's quite a lot, especially when he jumps in when the current boxers are talking and doesn't let them get there point across (e.g. When Hatton was on the other week). Seems a bit up his own arse

Like the OP I wasn't really into boxing when he was around as champion but I've heard of his story and I'd like to know more. Think I will get his autobiography, by all accounts a god read.

TV wise, I actually think when he is just a pundit on Friday/saturday fight night, he does a good job. But he's an awful presenter on Ringside, it seems like he's always going to get the words wrong on the autocue and as others have said, his interruptions are really annoying. They should just leave him to punditry. McGuigan would be a better co-presenter than him.

His book is well worth reading.

Clearly a man who has suffered from massive confidence issues throughout his life. He was a dull fighter, but got to respect him for sticking at it and becoming a world champion.

As good as Johnny was or thinks he is the man was pretty dull to watch hence one of the most ironic Nicknames in Boxing.

his first world title shot, against carlos de leon in sheffield, was one of the worst fights ever seen in a british ring, johnny lost all confidence in himself and hardly threw a punch through 12 very dull rounds.
he got another title shot later against james waring, in america, and did the same thing again, he just froze. after that his career looked finished, nobody wanted to pay to see johnny nelson again.
but credit to him, instead of giving up he travelled all over the world, fighting in his opponents back yard. he fought in france, south africa, australia, belguim, new zealand, thailand and brazil, winning some and losing others.
after losing a decision to adilson rodriguez (remember him?) in brazil, johnny then went on to win his next 21 fights, including winning the wbo cruiserweight title by ko'ing carl thompson, redeeming himself from the dissapointment of his early career.
    oh, 3 more things.
his real name is ivanson ranny nelson.
he once boxed in las vegas, on the trinidad-de la hoya undercard.
he was being considered as an opponent for mike tyson, round about the time tyson fought lou saverese, tyson's team knew nothing about nelson, they just thought he looked good.

A good athlete who had a decent boxing career without ever catching the public imagination. Now co-habiting with Adam Smith on Ringside where he's mastered the art of reading off an autocue whilst barely opening his mouth or moving his lips.

Nelson won the British and European Cruiserweight crowns, alongside being a long reigning WBO champ.

He's also a two time world heavyweight champion, picking up the WBF and WBU baubles along the way.

Great story, was a laughing stock but turned it all around,on his best day he looked excellent, good defence, quick, skilfull and decent power but i have to say he's been in more boring fights than any other fighter ive ever seen apart fromj ohn ruiz.

like has been said,a extreamly boring twat in most of his fights.

when he turned it on,which was nearly never(when stepped up to world class)he was very decent indeed, but mostly he was like a rabbit being bummed offa rhino, sorry,a rabbit caught in headlights
