Just how good was he? How far could he of gone? How would he of faired against the toneys, collins, hopkins of that era? Or any of ntodays era?
I would say he was on par with Benn & Eubank, and if not for the tragedy would have been a belt holder in the early 90's.
should have been a belt holder definetly, he beat Eubank the first time imo. Its a pity about his injuries becuase he seems like a nice fella and he could have provided more good fights aginst eubank and Benn and the rest of the fighters in his day
He knocked Benn out with a jab, arguably beat Eubank at middleweight in the first fight, was unlucky to lose to Eubank in the second fight, the one where he was injured. Plucky fighter and nice guy. Got handled by Mike McCallum though "The body snatcher" who was pretty awesome at the time. Probably one of the best UK fighters to not win a title, he was gifted and equally unlucky. Remember he handled Benn and Eubank pretty much when they were in their primes. (when they were KO'ing opponents)
After the tragic fight against Eubank. I was in a night club, Rudolphs, next to the Spurs ground and was talking to Ronnie Davies, Eubank's trainer. Unkown to us was the tragedy that was occuring
More then on Par he beat Benn and Eubank in many people's opinions in first fight. He did decent job against Mike McCallum but Mike just did his thing on way to a win. Should of been a champion springs to mind. It was Eubank when he was injured as well mate.
Would have been a monster at Super-Middleweight if what happened didn't. Was lucky to get a re-match against Eubank though as he was completely schooled in their first fight...
No, I'm a boxing fan who rarely has favourites but just loves the sport... Chris Eubank was so slick in the first Watson fight that I had him win by around 7 rounds. Watson just walked forward whilst Eubank picked him off silly...
I'm currently watching the Watson Eubank fight for the umpteenth time, and I've got Watson 1 up after 3 rounds. I'll update my scoring later.
Round 3 - given to Watson. Eubank was accurate but sparing with his jab, and threw snappy body shots mid-round. Watson however just generally did more and landed a big right. Also......Eubank, whilst standing around, did get hit with a few jabs flush. Watson's round Round 4 - Eubank VERY inaccurate beginning of round, but does have limited success with the left hook after his initial 1-2s miss. Watson good defensively but throws very little. Eubank lands with successive power punches mid-round. Eubank counterpunching well at the end of the round. Clearly round to Eubank. Round 5 - Eubank. Watson probably landed more (mainly downstairs) but Eubank seemed to hurt Watson a bit. Eubank was notably sloppy at points this round. Eubank's round Round 6: Watson. He hit harder and he hit more. Eubank counterpunched well towards the end of the round. Watson's round Round 7 - I strongly dislike scoring even rounds, so I have to give that round to Watson based on the fact he was marginally more accurate in a round where scoring shots were sparse. Watson's round. Round 8 - I have to give this to Eubank, he had a good flurry at the beginning of the round and counterpunched well at the end. Eubank's round. Round 9 - Watson upped the workrate but Eubank did a great job slipping most punches. Eubank landed with the most significant punches of the round. Towards the end of the round Eubank was visibly tiring and what little work he did was sloppy. Despite the sloppiness, a decent percentage landed. Eubank's round. Round 10 - Eubank certainly landed more body blows. But you know what? I'm not a fan of the amount of retreating he did in that round. Fighting off the back foot is good, dancing without throwing anything for over 30 seconds is not. Watson was the one coming forward making the fight and he probably landed the more significant head shots. Watson's round. Round 11 - It's nice, for once, to see Eubank counterpunched to death. Eubank just seems too tired to be effective. Watson's round. Round 12 - Eubank did try hard this round, and did well at the beginning, but Watson's shots were harder and snappier. Eubank did try to unload on Watson on two seperate occasions while Watson was on the ropes, but his punches were seriously laboured and had very little on them. Besides, they weren't landing. Watson's round. My final score is 115-113 Watson (I scored round 1 to Eubank and 2 to Watson).
Typo I meant Eubank. It was straight after the fight. Next morning I was about to brag about meeting Eubank's trainer when I heard the tragic news
