We need to chose a system of scoring for the new ~ ESB's BIG FIGHT PICKS ~ Prediction League. So far, we have two options. If you have a better system, please post it, in its final, complete form. Once I know which systems are on offer, I will put up a poll for us to chose the best one.

wide/close specific correct UD pick = 30 points
any correct decision pick = 25 points
for just correct winner pick = 15 points

exact round correct KO pick = 45 points
1 round off correct KO pick = 40 points
2-3 rounds off correct KO pick = 35 points
any other correct KO pick = 30 points
for just correct winner pick = 15 points

a wide UD will mean any decision where all 3 judges score the fight for one fighter and 2 or more of the judges' scores are 116-112 or wider. If two of the judges score the bout 115-113 then it's a close UD. In the case of a SD/MD, then it's scored as close UD as well.

With this system, the difference between picking the correct decision (wide or close) is only 5 points, so the judges' scores (which are rarely correct in boxing) don't play a major role in this league. With the specific score picks system (B) - below, there will be arguing going on when judges' scores are too wide or too close and it just complicates the league.

    Examples using Calzaghe-Kessler and Mormeck-Haye:

Poster A picks Calzaghe wide UD, so he wins 30 points (since judges scored that bout 116-112, 116-112, 117-111)
Poster B picks Calzaghe TKO9, so he wins 15 points.
Poster C picks Calzaghe close UD, so he wins 25 points.

Poster A picks Haye wide UD Mormeck, so he wins 15 points
Poster B picks Haye TKO9 Mormeck, so he wins 35 points.
Poster C picks Haye close UD Mormeck, so he wins 15 points.

    • wrong pick = 0 points
    • correct winner alone = 5 points
    • correct winner + correct Decision or T/KO = 10 points
    • draw = 30 points
    Stoppage picks:

    A stoppage pick would be e.g. "Haye T/KO 7"

...meaning, Haye will stop Mormeck in the 7th round
    • correct round of stoppage = 25 points
    • 1 round off correct round of stoppage, either up or down = 20 points
    • 2 rounds off correct round of stoppage, either up or down = 15 points
    • 3 rounds or more off correct round of stoppage, either up or down = 10 points
    Decision picks:

A decision pick would be e.g. "Calzaghe UD by 4"

...meaning, Calzaghe beats Kessler by 4 points (UD 116-112)
    • correct number of points advantage for winner = 25 points
    • 1 point off correct number of points advantage for winner, up or down = 20 points
    • 2 points off correct number of points advantage for winner, up or down = 15 points
    • 3 points or more off correct number of points advantage for winner, up or down = 10 points
    so, picking:

    Calzaghe UD by 3 (e.g. UD 117-114) or Calzaghe UD by 5 (e.g. UD 116-111) = 20 points
    Calzaghe UD by 2 (e.g. UD 118-116 ) or Calzaghe UD by 6 (e.g. UD 115-109) = 15 points
Calzaghe UD by 1 (e.g. UD 120-119) or Calzaghe UD by 7 (e.g. UD 115-108) or Calzaghe UD by 8 (e.g. UD 120-112), or more = 10 points

Amsterdam's (old) system, used in his league, last year, without the "clean-sweep":

    Scoring:

    Wrong pick: 0 points

The right fighter with the wrong result: 5 points

The right fighter with the right result(ko or dec.): 10 points

    ..............................

    Extra points :

For decision picks, type either 'close' or 'wide'.

MD/SD automatically falls under close. 115-113,115-113,116-112 would be 'close'. 116-112,116-112,115-113 and WIDER falls under 'wide'.

    Correct decision result: 15 points.

    For stoppage picks -

Coming within 3 rounds of the round where it was stopped: 15 points

    Within 1 round: 20 points.

    The correct round: 25 points.

DRAW/NC/TD prediction that hits: 30 points

    Examples using Calzaghe-Kessler and Mormeck-Haye:

Poster A picks Calzaghe wide UD, so he wins 15 points
Poster B picks Calzaghe TKO9, so he wins 5 points.
Poster C picks Calzaghe close UD, so he wins 10 points.

Poster A picks Haye wide UD Mormeck, so he wins 5 points
Poster B picks Haye TKO9 Mormeck, so he wins 15 points.
Poster C picks Haye close UD Mormeck, so he wins 5 points.

(Similar to system A); has the same problems as system A). and the same advantages over system B).)

    G) Amsterdam's method, as outlined in C) but including the "clean sweep". i.e. 20 points added to the weeks' total for picking all the winners correctly.

Please NOTE: there will not always be the same number of fights each week. This week there are four. Next week there might be two or just one - we only pick BIG fights. Is it fair to add the "clean sweep" for predicting 2 fights as well as for predicting 4, say?

    Or A

But definetely not B, i fail to understand it properly, its too much work for a 'fun' prediction league.

Clearly, A is the best. :p

It's simpler than B and doesn't rely on judges' decisions as much. Also, it makes the points difference between a KO and decision slightly smaller than C.

The clean sweep extra was brilliant, it cleared out who the best pickers were instantaniously.:yep

It wouldn't make so much sense in this league because we're not going to have equal numbers of fights each week. There are four this week; there might be only one or two next week. Seems unfair to give a clean sweep for both 4 correct picks and for 2 correct picks, for example...:think

I vote for the Amsterdamic method, with the clean sweep. You need at least 4 fights a week anyway and it isn't hard to find 4 fighters a week that people know.

In fact, if there is no clean sweep, I may not even participate.:bart
