I think we should have two further rules, for any system:

blue ribbon events - REALLY big fights e.g. Pavlik v. Taylor, Calzaghe v. Hopkins, Pac v. JMM get twice the points that ordinary big fights get.:deal

huki has to pick his picks before Amsterdam and brookyn1550 every week or he lose 25% of his points for the week, particularly since he will know which fights will be run every week first!:p :yep

    Thoughts?

I was hoping Amsterdam wouldn't come in here with the horrid "clean sweep" idea. :| That was the only bad thing about the predictions league last year.

The ribbon system is a very good idea.

The final idea is just plain discrimination against the champion. :D

Option B is my prefered method of scoring. How can the first week work properly though without first knowing the scoring criteria?

Unfortunately, there wasn't enought time to decide scoring and how to pick precisely this week...sorry...so, we'll give everyone the benefit of the doubt and will not penalise anyone for posting a pick in one way or another...once we've decided which system to go for, we'll specify exactly how picks should be made, and everyone will hopefully use the same system.

We should have the scoring system by this time next week...:good

The big advantage of system B) is this:

Take Calzaghe v. Kessler, for example: Calzaghe won UD 116-112.

Using system A), this qualifies as "wide UD". Using system A) would get more points if you thought Calzaghe would shut Kessler out compeletely (UD 120-108) - which qualifies as "wide" UD - than you would get for thinking Calzaghe would win UD 115-112, for example...which is only one points out - which qualifies as "close UD".

Using system B), you would get more points for Calzaghe UD 115-112 than for Calzaghe UD 120-108....since it is much closer to Calzaghe UD 116-112 - the actual result.

The big disadvantage of system B) is that it will take much longer to count up the scores and it will be easier to make mistakes when doing so. Systems D), E), F) are much easier to use. If many people join the league, it will be important to have a system that is easy to use.

So even though system B) is analytically the best, system F) might prove to be the best compromise.:think

Well... since picking something like the DLH-Forbes winner is not that much of a hard job, I'd like to suggest to give extra points for those who dare to pick THE UNDERDOG!

Just imagine: posters constantly and rightfully predicting 50-50 fights and Quintana-like upsets would get the biggest recognition anyway because picking 100 safe winners is not as good as picking 10 upsets IMO!

SO MORE POINTS FOR THE HARDER PICKS!

    My suggestion:

We should name an internet betting source to see the actual odds and use those odds as the indicator for extra points.

Let's see some examples, Bwin's betting on:

    Hopkins-Calzaghe:

    Joe Calzaghe (WAL) 1.36
    X 23.00
    Bernard Hopkins (USA) 3.10

    Klitschko-Ibragimov:

    Wladimir Klitschko (UKR) 1.20
    X 27.00
    Sultan Ibragimov (RUS) 4.30

    Duddy-Smitchet:

    John Duddy (NIR) 1.05
    X 29.00
    Walid Smichet (TUN) 9.00

Of corse there are odds for round pick, stoppage or not stoppage, we could use those too.

That system is FAIR because it's safe to bet on a Malignaggi points or Klitschko KO win.

So... let's say 10 points in default x BWIN odds:

    Picking the favorit Calzaghe: 10 x 1,36 = 13,6 points
    Picking underdog Hopkins: 10 x 3,10 = 31 points
    Picking Ibragimov: 10 x 4,30 = 43 points

So in the end the very expert/very lucky guy who can pick the 50/50 and underdog fights as well would get the most points, and THAT's FAIR!

    What do you think?

Unfortunately, it would take us a whole week to count up the scores using this method...not practical, I'm afraid...

Anyway...DLH v. Forbes will be unlikely to appear in the league, although, I'm not saying it won't, necessarily...it's not a big fight just because DLH is in it...BIG fights are fights involving very good competitors who both have a good shot at winning, in an important fight for the division.

Fights like Bute v. Joppy...NOT big fights either...

Well, you have to count a lot anyway, but this method is actually easier.

All You have to do is count in the odds when you are making the thread or the post and you can write down the final points in the first place like this:

    Guys, choose you winner:
    Calzaghe: 13,6p
    Hopkins: 31p
    Calzaghe on points ...
    Hopkins inside distance ...
    Other fights ...

Finding and counting in the odds takes just 10 seconds and everybody can read the scores in your first post of your thread as you can write the points next to the names when you make the thread/post.

In the end of the day u are making mathematics anyway, but it's more fair for a guy who rightfully picks the Quintanas.

Those methods up there are much more complicated. Of course it's just my suggestion...

I don't think we should be giving a damn about odds...we should not be going either with the market or against, but should call it as we see it. Anyway, I've added your suggestion to your list. Not sure I understand how it would work exactly, though...Do you add the 13.6 or the 31 to the total? Or is that it - you pick Hopkins and he wins, you get 31?

Yes, 31 if Hopkins wins, just 13,6 if Calzaghe, because most think that Calzaghe will win and if you somehow can smell the 'upset' less people seem to see, you should get more credit for that.

The problem with the other systems: it's easy to get a lot of points just picking the very big favorites to win - like Bute in the Joppy fight. But you have to agree with this- if somebody somehow smells an upset and picks Joppy, and somehow Joppy wins... you have to give more credit to the guy then who picks Bute and Bute wins... because EVERYBODY knows Bute will win.

I think a guy shouldn't get more points predicting 10 easy fights then a guy who predicts just 5, but 5 really tough one.

We don't have to use the betting odds. How about ESB's own polls? But you have to convert it into odds form.

The main thing: give the guy more recognition/points if he smells the upset nobody else seem to see coming. And odds/polls are good indicators for that.
