What's your Opinion on this fight. I ask because I've only just realised that of the judge s, one of em, Lou Filippo, actually scored it 142 -142. Anyone actually think the fight was that close?
I've never actually scored the fight RBR, but my impression was Hearns clearly won. Hearns kept the fight at long range, and Benitez was never able to make much impression on Hearns. Benitez showed a good defence as he often did, but as for showing offense to win rounds not so much.
Tommy actually said *142 - 142?? That judge must have been asleep *. I scored it Tommy winning by 5 round. Really don't get how old Lou saw a draw.
Agreed. Tommy had his good reach advantage in there, using that quick snakey jab. I think Benitez came back a little in a couple of the mid way round s but that was it for me. Tommy should have gotten a unanimous decision.
If I remember right, I had it either 11-4 or 9-6. I don't even remember if I called the slips 10-8 or not, but I'm absolutely positive if I called one, I'd have called both so it works out similar anyway. 145-138 seems about right.
It was a good fight , especially if you're interested in the artistry, and the technical side of boxing. But Hearns won the fight by at least 3-4 rds. Benitez for all of his defensive brilliance, was average offensively. That was the difference in the fight. He couldn't solve the puzzle of how to get past Hearn's jab. Hearns hurt/ broke his right hand early ( Going off memory) yet Benitez couldn't find away to take advantage of it. It was a good fight, but it shouldn't be a question of who won.
Hearns had a point deducted for pulling his head down when he shouldn't have and also had a KD scored against him when it blatantly wasn't. Even with that included a draw was absurd as Hearns outboxed him virtually all night in his finest display of "boxing."
Wilfred was so far behind, it reminded me of his fight with Leonard. he cant punch and he's not nearly aggressive enough. What can he do? He cant match Tommy's speed, height or reach and his his feet are spread too far apart. Not much foot speed either
Benitez had trouble countering Hearns because of his height, speed and superb jab. Quite a few of his right hand counters fell short or hit him in the chest. Hearn's power and sharpness also made it impossible to throw caution to the wind.
Benitez and Leonard would have been a fascinating rematch at 154. You'd have to favor a somewhat similar fight but Benitez really carried the weight well and IMO his most dominating performance ever was against Duran.
