Same here, with the first round being a round I scored even. Joe clearly won the fight, but it wasn't a complete outclassing like most make it seem. I liked the way Kessler fought the 12th. He was gunning for a KO and I think hurt Joe in the final 20 seconds with a big right hand.

It was a very good fight.

Kessler looked to really be giving Calzaghe trouble for the first half. Calzaghe had better stamina, however, and won most of the later rounds...although Kessler showed a lot of heart in having a few big pushes towards the later rounds. He came pretty close to beating Calzaghe but the better fighter won that night.

It could be scored 8-4 or 7-5.

i think people under estimate calzaghes shots, they will have more sting on them than you think i reckon, else someone like kessler would of walked through him.

I guess that anyone who under estimates those is likely to be dropped. Calzaghe drops a very good shot as Eubank and Veit found out seconds into their fights... But I wouldn't say he has a stinging shot because they don't work on it - see and hear what Woodhall says about it when he went to the Newbridge Gym to see Enzo Maccarinelli work with the speed-ball, the pads and the the bull rope ( Macca-Haye Setanta Show)... It's all about speed - they work on putting them together fast, jabbing fast, countering fast, swinging fast... They don't work on punching hard... Kessler didn't walk through the shots because that's not his style, didn't do it against Andrade, wouldn't do against Calzaghe in front of 60 thousand... I tend to agree with someone here - Kessler may not have the mental toughness and therefore, even though he's big, he's not really a hardman.

Been a LONG time since I've seen this fight but I do recall Eubank winning fairly clearly. Mostly due to Rocchigiani's inactivity over the first 4 rounds. Anyone else remember how this fight went?

I scored it 115-113. Calzaghe just took over midway through the fight and never looked back. Mikkel took the 12th but it was too late by then. Joe was something else on this night. Bigger win than Lacy IMO.

In RING magazine, Calzaghe mentions that in the 4th round, they went toe to toe, and that's when he realized he had to box, because he knew Kessler was the harder puncher and he would get knocked out if he kept it up.

Honest fighters are always welcome. To Kessler's credit, he openly admitted that Joe had hurt him with that punch to the stomach in the post-fight interview.

That's about how I had it. However, I watched a week or so after it happened. There were a lot of close rounds, but I really do think Calz. won about 9 or 10 of all the rounds.

I made this post some time after the fight. I still think it should have been scored closer than it was, although I could agree with the 7-5.

    Here it is:

And I've come to new conclusions about the scoring in this fight.

    When watching the fight I had round 1 even and rounds 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11 for Calzaghe and rounds 2, 4, 7, 12 for Kessler.
But after watching and scoring the fight four times I come to a totally different conclusion. The fight actually WAS much closer than it appeared

Now - I want to stress that Ive ben watching and scoring the fight afterwards UNBIASED and without any emotional influence. And I dont want to be considered a nuthugger or anything - the following is truly how I think the fight should have been scored.

Harold Lederman scored the fight very poor. To begin with he had round 1 for Kessler and round 2 for Calzaghe....Which fight did he watch??

I would ike to notice, that I am counting the signficant punches landed in each round and I combine it with ring generalship and other factors as well.

    Here it is:

    Round 1:
Neither fighter is doing something wild. Kessler lands 3 significant punches - Joe lands 2. Joe is controlling round one a bit more.
    This round is a draw!

    Round 2:
Both fighters staying at distance and Kessler is successfull in landing the jab. Calzaghe lands 2 significant punches. Kessler lands 3. Kessler has more control than Joe this round.
    This is Kesslers round!

    Round 3:
Calzaghe is really letting his hands go now. Controlling the fight and making Kessler back up. Calzaghe lands 5 significant punches. Kessler 1.
A very clear round for Calzaghe!

    Round 4:
Joe starts the round pretty well but gets hit with a nasty uppercut. Joe backs alot in this round but counters pretty well. Kessler lands 5 significant punches. Joe lands 2.
A very clear round for Kessler.

    Round 5:
Almost a repition of the first round. Both fighters have immense respect for eachother, although much looser. Kessler lands 3 significant punches. Joe lands 1.
This is Kesslers round but its a close one.

    Round 6:
This is where the fight changes for real. Joe starts to use his fast jab and it actually pays of. Joe is outjabbing Kessler who is very, very passive in this round. Calzaghe lands two significant punches in this round. Kessler lands zero!
    Easily Calzaghes round!

    Round 7:
Both fighters go for it but Kessler is in control and lands the more significant shots. Kessler is still measuring but he manages to land a combo. Kessler lands 3 significant punches. Joe lands 2.
An even round, but Kessler is in control. Kesslers round.

    Round 8:
Calzaghe is dominating the centre of the ring, letting his hands go and he is backing Kessler up. Joe starts to land punches from weird angles and showboating a bit.
Joe lands 6 significant punches. Kessler lands 1.
Joe is dominant and wins the round very clear!

    Round 9:
Same procedure as in round 8. Joe is dominant and really showing how good a fighter he really is. Outjabbing Kessler at times and throwing from weird angles. Kessler clearly doesnt know what to do and seems very tired. Joe lands 6 significant punches. Kessler 2.
    Easily Joes round! Dominant!

    Round 10:
Calzaghes workrate is showing. Joe is unreal - he is throwing a hell f alot of punches but wins this primarily on workrate. Joe lands 4 significant punches. Kessler 2.
    Easily Joes round!

    Round 11:
Calzaghe outclassing, outjabbing and outworking Kessler who seems very tired and confused. Calzaghe lands 4 significant punches - Kessler is passive and lands zero punches!
    Easily Joes round!

    Round 12:
As often seen - the twelth round is developing different as the fight as a whole. Calzaghe starts with nice inside work but Kessler's pressure is doing damage to Joe. Kessler lands 6 significant punches but Joe is a warrior. Joe lands 3 significant punches.
    Easily Kesslers round!

This fight should have been scored 115-114 in favour of Calzaghe.

Calzaghe landed in total 36 significant punches.
Kessler landed in total 30 significant punches.

I know that this score is very different to both the judges verdict but also how fight fans on esb generally have scored this fight. But watch the tapes dude's!!! I am scoring this as it should.

I would like to add that that often the number of punches THROWN is actually more important than the ACTUAL number of punches LANDED!

I know that some of you have scored the fight 9-3 for Calzaghe and some even 11-1. WTF??

Calzaghe won this fight on workrate and with being adaptive and spoiling Kesslers gameplan. Calzaghe showed tremendous boxing brains together with Enzo.
