Unbeaten Edinburgh boxer Craig McEwan will return to the ring next month to take on Danny Perez in California. The bout has been tentatively scheduled for July 23 at the Pechanga Casino in LA. The 28-year-old, 18-0 (10 KOs), is currently training in his fathers gym in Edinburgh, but will shortly leave his hometown of Wester Hailes to return to the Wild Card gym in LA where he works with renowned trainer and manager Freddie Roach. Indeed it was under Roach that McEwan began his professional career with Oscar de la Hoyas Golden Boy promoting the Scottish prospect. Asked how training was going, McEwan said: Good, just at my dads gym at Clovenstone working with Garry Young who is still an active boxer and a qualified strength and conditioning trainer. Sparring is not too good, not like the Wild Card, but keeping me moving and working away. I did three times around Arthur's Seat and I was fine, so fitness is ok but as soon as I get the go ahead Ill pick it up. When he finally gets the fight confirmed it will be off to the Wild Card where McEwan will put the finishing touches on his preparation for the experienced 33-year-old Perez, 34-7 (17 KOs). He added: I hope to have two to three weeks [out there]. Its not ideal but good enough to get hard sparring when I get back. In his five years as a professional McEwan has never fought in the UK but hopes to one day top a bill on native soil. Being back has been good and I would like to fight here if I could one day, said McEwan, who returned to Edinburgh for the birth of his second child. how on earth can you say he is scottish boxings golden boy? what titles has he won? or who has he beat of any real note?
Aye he is promoted by Golden Boy. His blogs on this website are really good - insight into life at Wild Card!
With Golden Boy behind him and Roach in his corner and being predominately based in the US I think he'll be looking to do it the American way. Hopefully he does something big next year, would be good to see more British boxers at the top!
anyone know who jim black is? he writes articles on the BBC for boxing, this is from his latest on Craig McEwen "McEwan, currently Scotland's most successful boxer" eh... really? no he is not. if you're basing that on his unbeaten record, then maybe the 18 fights unbeaten makes him scotlands most succesful boxer...atsch
I dont think unbeaten records make you successul. You could be fighting my gran for all anyone knows. When you got Ricky Burns fighting for a world title later in the year and Kris Hughes going for a Commonwealth title, an 18-0 record seems somewhat overshadowed. Don't know who Jim Black is though lol
I don't mind Craig seen a couple of fights not a Banger but gets the job done I'd like to see him step it up. plus he's from the same estate as my family my little brother and cousin went to his dads gym
