He showed nothing against Larry and while neither did Scotty LeDeoux at least Scott had a plan, take all Lar's punches for ten round hoping it would wear him out,,,,well it was a bad plan but Frank hadn't even that.
I'm surprised Frank didn't resurface in another five years as one of George Foreman's comeback victims. He was on the same level as guys like Guido Trane, Ken Lakusta, Bobby Hitz, and that guy Foreman fought over in Japan whose name escapes me at this time.
i happened to see this fight live in AC, Frank was a novice but just the way Larry liked them. Frank tried but was as green as a baby coconut. Larry used his jab and thumb to perfection and Scott Frank was blinded but still alive at the end......Holmes was a great fighter based off the fights he had with the better men but he loved to pick em out of elementary school or the retread section so based off who he didn't fight I can not speculate off my imagination that he could have even beaten a encouraged Weaver, Coetzee, Dokes,Page,Tate,Thomas. Holmes had longevity and the most corrupt promoter that made Mr. Gray pale in comparison
Frank, LeDoux, Cobb and Jones - besides those four what really awful undeserving contenders were there? I'd say none. Any reign that long, having four completely duds is actually not that bad especially considering the fact that King was involved. Things could have been worse. All of Holmes' defenses could have been as bad as those four. They weren't.
Lets see there were always tougher guy around then most of Larry's defenses Alfredo Evangelista- very weak contender Ossie Ocasio 13 fights -had 2 wins over a titted Jimmy Young but still weak Mike Weaver 19-8 trial horse became a good fighter & gained confidence but not title worthy at the time Lorenzo Zanon-very weak Leroy Jones-looked good on paper 24-0-1 but anyone who knew him knew-very weak Scott Ledoux-won 1/5 last fights including Holmes fight Lucien Rodriguez -very weak Leon Spinks-10-2-2-was Ko'd in1 by Coetzee earlier-weak challenge Witherspoon-15 fight youngster Marvis Frazier-weak-10 fight youngster David Bey- 14 fights acceptable but weak-but only won 4 of his next 16 fights revealing a weak challenge Witherspoon-Acceptable but a 15 fight novice Williams-16 fights-Aceeptable but young and green James Smith-14-1-Aceeptable but 14 fights and 1 solid win Ali-good defense but a completely shot Ali Shavers-good defense Cooney-good defense but over a guy who never fought past 8 rds Berbick-decent defense Michael Spinks-good defense-although Mike never fought a heavyweight fight and was considered less dangerous than other potential defenses I had to go check and remind myself and at the time of the defenses I can see there were other more dangerous opponents so in reality other than Shavers and Cooney there were better fighters that were more dangerous, there were a few acceptable but other than longevity I think Holmes picked the weakest defenses overall at the time of the fight and remember he did not unify (not sure if that works for him or against him legacy wise)
Zanon had to be the absolute worst choice. There was nobody looking forward to the fight. As for the Weaver fight, you could not place a bet on it. That's how lopsided the bout was considered going in. Certainly Weaver changed all that but he was not even in the mismatch category. They sure did dig up Leon Spinks as well. Nobody pulling for Leon in that one either. He was thought of so lightly, he wouldn't have been considered a worthy opponent for Cooney--and his management was happy with a pulse. But Leon isn't beating a Larry Holmes.
You should add to this list Lucien Rodrigues for sure. Weak challenger, who was previusly knocked out THREE times by not-so-good Alfredo Evangelista:-( But overall I'll agree with you. Wlad has his share of weak challengers, too. Shot Mormeck and Colin Wilson's victim Alex Leapai are among them.
