The commentators keep saying the ref knew what was coming, and in a few rounds Murray might've knocked him out, but wtf kind of justification is that?

It's not like this would be the first time in boxing history that a fighter losing on the cards managed to get a come from behind ko. Just last weekend Willie Nelson was getting outboxed by Harrison who was a knockout artist, while Nelson isn't known to be much of a power puncher, and we all saw what happened.
