I have never rated Terry as a coach and i think the results Alex Arthur and Paul Appleby are getting are starting to prove this. I cannot believe how bad Alex is looking against average fighters, this guy was the best boxer in Scotland only 18 months ago and he hasn't had a really punishing career for it all to fall to pieces that quick and Paul looked out of shape and like a novice against Lareya not a former british champion, and in the corner Terry's advice was lacking any tactical know how. Lareya could have been put on the back foot and bullied yet Terry was asking for more flurries. I may be wrong but if anyone knows of any good boxers he has coached i'd like to hear from you. Also any thoughts on Terry's coaching that has been observed by anybody else.
Most of the top amateurs in Edinburgh left their gyms to join terry, what does that tell you? He also coaches commonwealth silver medalist in Dehli Josh Taylor every day.
ok so he can coach amateurs. what about professionals? it is a totally different sport. also the TOP boxers you speak about have been coached to a high level before joining him. Josh Taylor was also in the Scotland team whilst at Gilmerton ABC and was coached quite a bit by the Scottish national coaches. This doesn't show Terry as a good coach but maybe someone who promises kids more than he can deliver
Okay well it's seems pretty obvious to me that you may be a tad bitter that one of your clubs top fighters has left to join Terry. what? :huh
Maybe it's just that neither are as good as they (and others) thought they were? Arthur is probably bordering on Audley Harrison type levels of delusion..... every interview he gives he talks about becoming the world lightweight champion.... he was soundly outpointed by Nigel Wright, who's an English title level fighter. Apparently he looked a bit banged up after his last fight, albeit one he won easily. Trying to make 130 for too long screwed him, together with switching trainers every time the wind blew and being inactive. A decent domestic/European class fighter, nothing more. I wasn't of the opinion that Ricky Burns was a genuine world class fighter, in fact I expected him to get blown away by Martinez, but fair play to the lad, he's knucked down after two losses and rebuilt his career.... hopefully he can get some good fights in over the next few years. Contrast that to Arthur, changing trainers, slagging off Frank Warren :zzz Go away
Gomez finished Arthur. He thought he was the dogs bollocks before Gomez destroyed him in front of his home crowd. He's never been the same since, in my opinion. I agree with your main point. Arthur and Appleby just really aren't as good as everyone first thought.
I have much more of a problem with Dean Powell, who's nothing more then a matchmaker giving fighters technical instructions.
I hate to say this, because its a lads career etc etc, but I never, ever rated Appleby - he was just a kid who matured quickly allowing him to bang out some impressive stoppages in the ams and pro's at a young age. Arthur on the other hand is a waster and very talented. can't slag the trainer at all. Look at Arthurs fundamentals, they used to be pretty perfect- takes a good trainer to instill that.,
If I were a trainer I'd insist that he either stick to motivational talking or get out of the corner. Sometimes he has helped, especially in Cleverly's last fight.... but generally I think it's a case of too many cooks with him there. Apparently he's a dab hand at wrapping hands..... by all means do that but leave the technical advice to the trainer.
He was the only person Calzaghe trusted to wrap his hands. If Powell wasn't about, he'd wrap them himself. As for Powell in the corner, he's needed with Cleverly to keep his old man in check. Vince Clev gets a bit carried away :rofl
:deal :rofl I remember early in the Murat fight Clev walks back to corner, Powell looks to sit him down, as he parks his arse on stall his fathers got towel in hand looks to crowd and swings it round in air :happy. He seems to love his sons fights
He's a typical parent. But most parents are in the front row, not the corner !! He has to remember he is being paid to give critical analysis not start ****ing songs :rofl
About 7:45 onwards...:rofl...love the fact he's only finished round 2. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOoEZ-cFizw[/ame]
