Wolverhampton tonight. An interesting card featuring Ben Wilkes' best performance to date, Lyndsey Scragg looking poor against an awful Angel McKenzie and a surprise win for Youssef Al Hamadi over Steve Saville. I walk out, wondering why so many are still milling around the foyer with the main doors barred and bolted and find myself on the set of Street Crime UK. Police with batons drawn, dogs barking, ambulance. As I get away and into the car park I see an obviously shaken woman saying "They were stamping on his head. I'm never coming here again." I dont know if she meant Wolverhampton or boxing, but I don't blame her. There were no problems inside the hall, no heavy atmosphere and it seemed as though everyone was supporting a local boxer. All that happened was the house favourite losing a disputed but hardly outrageous verdict. Why?????
Was there a bar at the venue? I always find that when punters are boozing at a fight, lots go into 'fight mode' themselves, seen it a lot at the boxing.
There was a bar but there didn't seem to be much drinking. In fact I was pleasantly surprised at how many of the audience were there to watch the whole card rather than their own fighter. It was a good atrmosphere which made what happened outside the more surprising
I'd prolly call it I'm Never Coming Here Again or Davidjay, but I think the first is more catchy and box office.
There was a few like that at Munroe vs Martinez II, supporting the undercard fighters. Trying to cook up some trouble with the Spaniards that had come over :verysad
Sorry to hear that. Didn't see no trouble myself. There were quite a few of Wolverhampton's less savoury characters about lol. Happens everywhere, usually its nothing to do with proper boxing fans.
