He's on for Marquez-Bradley PPV opener. He faces Caputo Smith, a club fighter and fringe contender from Pennsylvania. Smith was kayoed by Kevin Engel and got a flat out robbery over Dhafir Smith. This is a measuring stick for his chances against Monaghan. This is a showcase. What do you think of Monaghan? A couple times he showed glimpses of world level ability. Others I saw him brawl like a wild scrapper. At 31 (with little experience in boxing) he must keep active against top level opposition. Signing with TR should get him that + more exposure in the coming months. Marcus Johnson, Dhafir Smith, Otis Griffin. These are the kinds of men I want in his next two, three fights by early next year. I'd like a Will Rosinsky, Marcus Oliveria, Denis Grachev, Zsolt Erdei soon after. The first three are fights he would win. The last four would prove what he can do at world class. Let us see...
Oh...OK. So he is still fighting Anthony Smith. :yep When you said "Caputo Smith" I thought it was a substitute opponent, but it's the same person. Smith is alright for Monaghan right now but he will need to make the most of this exposure and step up his competition almost immediately afterward. His best result after the MD over Dhafir Smith is a knockout of Douglas Otieno Okola, but that guy is knocked out by any halfway decent LHW prospect he faces. Smith is a fringe top 15 light heavy in the US, and with a decisive victory over him Seanie could firmly place himself in the top 10 and springboard toward some televised paydays. (which is about his ceiling; I don't quite see him as championship material) Seanie has been calling for a clash with fellow unbeaten Mike Lee. That would be an excellent next step after this PPV appearance, since now his profile will be raised enough to actually put him on Lee's exposure level.
Very true. I think Smith has a lot of issues. He's not all that special. Neither is Monaghan. I think Monaghan will crack the world top 20, maybe 15. But there will be limitations. Roadblocks, if you will. We'll have to watch him fight by fight. Mike Lee is a hypejob. He is the Zou Shiming of the USA. Subway commercials, lol. That doesn't make a fighter. I think Lee will get protected a bit and gently move up towards an eventual (and rather) abrupt fall to the bottom. TR is looking to market a white kid. Whatever, I am very supportive of getting one into the world levels of boxing. At Light Heavyweight TR's three best prospects are likely Trevor McCumby >> Seanie Monaghan >>>>>>> Mike Lee. Really. With that said I think it is closest between Thomas Williams Jr and Trevor McCumby on who is the US's top 175lber for the future. Trev is only 20. He hits like a tank and is an awkward fighter to hit back. Monaghan is an Irish slugger. He's fun. He's powerful. He's got power. He's got a ways to go. At 31 I do hope TR has him fighting at LEAST 3-4 times a year (televised often) for about 4 or so years. He doesn't have much wear and tear. Couple brawls. More like a little scuff and not an ax through the windshield. We'll see, man. Monaghan sort of reminds me of Jessie Vargas. Much different stylistically as Vargas boxes down the stretch easier and Monaghan has significantly more power. But when it comes to their futures in boxing: I see similar paths.
He's the Irish tough guy from Boston? If so, seems like a hell of a tough guy but pretty slow and pretty deliberate, I can barely remember enough of him or his "skillset" to go into strengths or weaknesses as a fighter, he's just tough guy Sean Monaghan
I've watched him a few times, was he fighting recently? I assumed so given the thread and I expected to be corrected on the geography there, Boston is automatically the one that pops into your head but I wasn't confident about it lol
Check out his last fight against some guy named Dion. Knocked him out flat. Took his range away and beat him down quickly. Big KO in one. Rather impressive. Put one leg on the hype train for me. :yep
Ah well a good strong punch is always a plus but from what I've seen I wouldn't jump on the hypetrain just yet, he is very rough around the edges someone with a little finesse will be deadly to him speaking as an Irishman by the way :hey
I got one foot on. He's a good fighter. Just needs some tests. A guy like Erdei, Fonfara, Campillo, would be a test in a year/two. Before that I'd like a guy like Otis Griffin? Crafty, prolly couldn't upset though. We need to get some measurements of his skills and attributes. Prove yourself, Seanie.
Yeah. Otis Griffin is always a tough fight. Odd style. Gives it his all. He doesn't fear tangling it it up. He goes through eight, ten, or twelve.
Griffin is a little down hill. He was never to the heights of even Michael Grant. Grant is fully shot.
