Well, o´grady was 73-1 when he challenged for his first title vs jim watt. he was stopped in twelve. his only loss had come when he was stopped by danny little red lopez in four rounds. marty jakubowski was 85-1 when he challenged miguel angel gonzales in his first title bid. he lost by UD. his only loss up to that point had come when he was stopped in six rounds by julio cesar chavez in a non title fight. both have in common that they compiled great records in the american midwest by fighting in small clubs against what one would call "tomatocans". o´grady was the harder puncher, jakubowski was the slicker boxer. to me, this is a tough call. o´grady would be favoured, but i think marty´s slick style could get him a close win by decision.
O'Grady has the bigger name, but Jacobowski fought a few better men. O'grady turned pro at only 15, but I think his dad set him up with many 0-0-0 fighters for most of his career, who for all we know were neihborhood kids.
yes, both fought alot of bums, but both could fight. o´grady could punch but was a little stiff imo. jakubowski lacked the dig.......but he was slick. a real cutie, not what you would expect from a fighter from the midwest circuit. he could ride out punches real nice. if he had a punch, he would have won a belt for sure.
Well if you are saying peak to peak who wins i would probably go for marty to win a decision. most of his loses were to good fighters and he was naturally bigger and gradys chin wasnt to hot
i got a look at marty when he challenged arthur grigorian in germany. grigorian was one of those fighters who, in his prime, was something else. a real top talent. just his management never gave him a chance to fight a big name that is why he is mostly unkown. he made several defences of the wbo belt, but against mostly very weak opposition. i saw him fight jakubowski in hamburg.........and i was impressed by marty. jakubowski had been called in as a late sub and i expected an easy win. but instead jakubowski showed and excellent chin, quick hands and very good defensive skills. great at slipping and countering. he lost a UD, but showed that he was really a skilled fighter. o´grady was more of a brawler. he had more power for sure, but marty was the better boxer. the only way for o´grady to win would be by taking marty out of his stride, forcing a brawl and taking him out. but marty had a good chin.........neither grigorian nor a prime miguel angel gonzales could hurt him. chavez stopped him, but that was called of a bit early and jakubowski wasnt down against him either. so i doubt o´grady could stop him. so i take the boxer in this one, with marty being too slick and winning a ud.
Jakubowski, though competent, was basically a runner with very little punch. If Sean O'Grady could defeat Hilmer Kenty in a 15 rounder, then he sure as heck could handle Jakubowski. O'Grady wins.
