I'm paraphrasing the following dialogue from the movie "Searching for Bobby Fisher", about a chess prodigy discovered by a chess Grandmaster. I honestly feel this way as a Roy Jones fan when I feel that noone today can take the place of Roy Jones: Bruce: You have no idea what I want. What is Boxing, do you think? Those who play for fun or not at all dismiss it as a game. The ones who devote their lives to it for the most part insist that it's a science. It's neither. Roy Jones got underneath it like no one before and found at its center, art. I spent my life trying to play like him. Most of these guys have. But we're like forgers. We're competent fakes. His successor wasn't here tonight. He wasn't here. He is asleep in his room in your house. Your son creates like Roy Jones. He sees like him, inside. Fred: You can tell this by watching him box some drunks in the park? Bruce: Yes. You want to know what I want. I'll tell you what I want. I want back what Roy Jones took with him when he disappeared.
Bobby Fischer was the greatest chess player to ever live. Roy Jones was the greatest ___________?????????? Illusion of talent? I don't know, somebody fill that blank for me.
Roy is my favorite boxer not saying he is an ATG but the way he made many look foolish to even think about entering in the ring with him priceless... Sweet Science.
Roy Jones may not be the greatest boxer of all time, but for sure, he is among the most talented, and had the work ethic to match it. There may have been others who were as talented but didn't have the work ethic or the mental toughness he had.
Jones at his very best was not the best fighter of his era. Manny Pacquiao is a better fighter and Floyd Mayweather may be too. His style was distinctive and special, but as a fighter, there's better now and has been in the past. Going back to the 70's/80's, he wouldn't have been so dominant, so it's not like he was a once in a lifetime talent.
I'd have to respectfully disagree. I love Pacquiao, but more for his humble and modest personality than his skills. Pacquiao throws more punches but Roy's punches were more efficiently delivered because they were based on timing, deception and speed. Defensively, Roy is also far superior. Floyd comes close, his defense and overall technique is better but his offense is not as smooth and intuitive as Roy's. Roy knew how to bend orthodox boxing technique to complement his amazing athleticism. Roy's movement was so masterful that he can exploit opportunities and defend at the same time. Floyd can as well but not as well as RJ.
No, all you have to do is watch any of their fights... Roy was a much more special boxing talent that Manny, who is special himself, but not on par with Roy in that department.
Amir Kahn excellent ability and a glass jaw. But he wont make it as far as Roy,before getting kod but he will look awesome until then.
