Charlie Zelenoff has eerie similarities to Roy Jones. Both have Glass Jaws and both are extremely deluded. Both have been knocked out by club fighters in their last fights. Actually, Zelenoff did better as he was only DQ'd, not knocked out in round 1 by an Aussie bum with a buzz-cut called Danny "The Green Machine" Green. :rofl:rofl
Thanks man! Amir Khan is very good but when I see him box, I feel he doesn't know how to use his talents to the fullest extent. He's better now with Roach in his corner but he's not an artist like Roy. He doesn't really know how to box on the back foot, he doesn't seem to know how to set traps and is just starting to learn how to feint. 3 years from now, he could be an ATG but for now, he's just another talented fighter.
Jones' style and physical attributes made him look better than he was. As a boxer, he just wasn't once in a lifetime. Sure, he was great, but I really do think that Pacquiao fares better against the greats than Jones. You can't really discard the one massive flaw in Jones either. Are you going to bet on him beating a Bob Foster with that chin? Jones was great but even though his style was special, as a fighter, he was not flawless. I don't think he was better than a Duran or Leonard, in fact, he doesn't really come close. Even if he was better, his resume is too lacking to really hold him in such high esteem.
resume: 1. Embarrassing and completely shutting out a 46-0 James Toney. 2. Beating Hopkins. Regarding Danny Green, Glen Johnson etc. I guess Ali is crap because he was embarrassed and dominated by Trevor Berbick. And Michael Jordan's legacy is diminished by his Wizards stint. Ray Leonard is crap because he was knocked out by Hector Camacho. And Ray Robinson's 18 losses also diminish his legacy. Right?
Bull****.... I am not saying he would beat Foster, but that flaw came after he had gone way downhill, and was nowhere near his best. I don't understand why people fail to realize this. He was hit by Ruiz in the first round, a shot that would put him into a coma after he dropped back down from heavyweight, and he took it very well. I know everyone hates Ruiz, but he was 30 ****ing pounds heavier than Jones, if Jones had a glass Jaw, that would have dropped him.
I tend to agree with you, but, playing Devil's Advocate, there isn't a lot of proof to back it up. You say Jones was never hurt in his prime, I say his chin wasn't tested until after his prime. Sure, there are odd punches to back your claim up but they are so seldom, they make a weak case. I think no matter what, his chin was always weak. It was probably exaggerated due to the weight loss but you don't go from having a solid chin to that unless those problems were there throughout your career - Jones just hid them well.
I am not gonna even say Jones had a great chin.... Like you said, their isn't enough proof of him eating leather.... But I think it was average, I have seen him take enough shots to believe that, the Ruiz fight for instance... I would even go as far to say that the first Tarver fight took what little punch resistance he had left... He took some bombs in that fight would KO the current version easily i think. Also I think having an average chin, and being as hard to hit as he was in his prime, would still match him up well H2H against many ATG's.
I think that the fact that it took so long to find that Roy Jones has an average chin is a testament to his boxing ability. And it took until Roy was 35 years old, way past his prime. And to say that a boxer is chinny if he can't take the power of Bob Foster, then it must say that all of the boxers he KO'd are chinny or Bob Foster was just one of the best punchers in history. I think its the latter. Resumewise, he has beaten the best, who have beaten the rest. There's no point debating until this has been recognized.
Have you ever thought by hating on Jones you are actually bringing down your boy Calzaghe as well?? The greatest name on his resume is a 40 year old, shot to pieces, glass jawed fraud and a joke.:huh That doesn't really make too great of a case for him.
Roy Jones was near-invincible in his prime. He made James Toney look like a complete ****ing amateur. Say what you want about his chin, but there WAS a reason he was fighter of the decade and the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet for a long time.
