I don't even count that fight as Calzaghe's best win. It was an easy US payday on HBO. Calzaghe completely embarrassed Jones.
The problem is, if this was Ali, Leonard or Robinson, you would have more than two notable points on their resume. I know Jones had more than that, but he didn't have a remarkable resume and, also unlike the others, there are questions about him. The fact he lost when he was old is irrelevant. I don't care about those, I do care about what he did in his prime though.
I'm not discrediting him because I think Foster would have wiped the floor with him, I'm just using it to back-up my point that Jones was not a once in a lifetime fighter. He was not as special as Pacquiao is now and, in a different era, that would have been proven.
And had Jones been prime, it would have been by far the best win on Calzaghe's resume, not bad for a glass jawed joke and fraud. To be the best win on such a great fighter's resume.
We differ in opinion... I think if he was in a different era, a prime Jones would be even more proven than he is now.
I think he does match up well against the greats too. Honestly, I see any version of Monzon or Hopkins having massive trouble with Jones. Same for Charles or Spinks. I just like to think I'm more realistic about his career. Despite looking untouchable throughout his prime, I don't think he was that good. His style made him look better than he was, in my opinion.
If Roy Jones is not special because you think Bob Foster would have beaten him, then is Pacquaio not special because he would have lost to SRL, Thomas Hearns, SRR or any of the other elite ATG welterweights?
Fair enough, mate I'm not a Jones hater. I'm a fan and think he often gets underrated, but we obviously disagree on some things. Incredible fighter to watch.
I can respect that... He is my favorite fighter so I probably look at his career more biased than others.... It is the "fraud" and "joke" talk i hear from other posters that i can't agree with.
I said "not as special". Jones clearly was a great fighter, I don't dispute that. As for Pacquiao, I'd choose to rate him against 130 - 140lbers because against guys like Hearns or Robinson the difference in size would be great. Pacquiao would have much more to worry about that the other guys skills, but in a division where he is physically equally matched, I do think he comes out on top against most greats.
Its all good:good You back your opinions up with subjective info, that is not to common around here anymore.:yep
The only "joke" is thinking a boxer who dominated for such a long time could be a "fraud". Embarassingly bad posts by those morons.
pacquiao may be the most dynamic boxer around , but roy was the most beautiful boxer i have seen. people can criticise his resume , his career, his chin- and most would be valid. but what they cannot deny is that Roy had some of the most exciting boxing ability we have ever seen. what he was able to do in that ring didnt seem like fighting at times- it seemed like choreographed action sequences- and he made it look easy. he made highlight reels out of every fight he was in, the way he moved was amazing. i havent met anybody who boxes- who didnt want to fight like roy jones junior.
