To fully explain my reasoning for picking Mendoza to KO Fundora last night, since I'd been mulling it over for a few days beforehand, but only switched to Mendoza about 10 minutes before the opening bell sounded. I had this little voice in the back of my head telling me the last time out, that he was going to stop Rosario because he'd hooked up with Salas, and he's always had decent power, but never really sat down on his shots or had great timing. He was the definition of an incomplete package. But I didn't, because I didn't know just how much he'd improved under Salas. So I didn't listen to my gut. However, once he put on his masterclass against Jeison, from the moment this fight was announced, I thought he could be yet another banana peel. Quite frankly I was befuddled why everyone was ignoring it and not taking Mendoza seriously as an opponent. Because think about it... Rosario isn't quite as easy to stop as most people think he is. He's only been KO'd by guys with solid power. Like prime Gallimore, Lubin and Charlo. Yet all three of them didn't stop him as quickly or as violently as Mendoza did. The precise accurate well timed counters from Mendoza did a number on him. So, it stands to reason, Mendoza under Salas, with his vastly improved far more accurate punch technique, could pack the same kind of power as a Lubin, who badly hurt Fundora and forced him to take a knee. Although Mendoza has one thing going for him that Lubin doesn't, he's durable as hell and has an excellent chin. So he could soak up a ton of damage, biding his time, looking to land that perfect shot, and let's be honest, with a guy as easy to hit as Fundora, there was going to be several opportunities. So when that same voice started sending up a red alert, I listened. As far as landing that well timed accurate counter... he did.:D

    Round 1 Olivo 10-9

Olivo darting in and out of range, with decent high guard defense, landing 2 and 3 punch combinations, Nunez occasionally anding a counter left hook, but not nearly enough of them.

    Round 1 Olivo 10-9
    Round 2 Olivo 10-9

Olivo now landing 3, 4 and 5 punch combinations. Nunez landing with more frequency, especially his overhand right, but hs accuracy is trumped by the amped up output of Olivo.

    Round 1 Olivo 10-9
    Round 2 Olivo 10-9
    Round 3 Olivo 10-9

Nunez was landing the left hook, now even that's being blocked. Olivo's combos to the head and body are a beautiful sight to behold, easily outworked him.

    Round 2 Olivo 10-9
    Round 3 Olivo 10-9
    Round 4 Nunez 10-9

Pretty bad round for Olivo, he slipped not once but twice, and got countered countless times with heavy rights. Olivo looking a little shook. But came back well late.

    Round 3 Olivo 10-9
    Round 4 Nunez 10-9
    Round 5 Olivo 10-9

Close round, but Olivo regained his footing, upping his output again, Nunez landed some counters and jabs early, but the volume and looping hooks to the head from Olivo nicks it.

    Round 5 Olivo 10-9
    Round 6 Olivo 10-9

Another close round, Olivo's volume and body work is superior to Nunez's one punch at a time. Many of them are being parried or blocked. Olivo's jab is also more accurate.

    Round 7 Olivo 10-9

The pressure from Olivo was relentless, Nunez looking quite tired, Olivo is tagging him with a barrage of hooks, including an overhand right that rocked Nunez to his core late, and he looked shook up the rest of the round.

Farhood's scorecard is almost identical to mine, the only round we differ on is the 5th, which he gave to Nunez.

I see absolutely no pathway to victory for Nunez, sure maybe I was too generous to Olivo in round 5, but by the same token, I may have been too generous to Nunez in the 9th. Best case scenario for Nunez is a draw. Anything other than a draw and that's a bit egregious, or an Olivo win, is bull****.
