I thought the stoppage was fine. Powell was taking big shots and not firing back. Besides, I won't often second guess the referee, who is only a few feet from the action and able to see the effect of the punches and the condition of the fighters. On another note, Friday and Wednesday Night Fights have been a death trap for the favorites this year.
Powell was supposed to be the #1 contender to the IBF belt ... that belt was his for the taking. What happened?
In boxing you're allowed to continue for as long as you can intelligently defend yourself. Sechew wasn't so much doing that for the last thirty seconds there.
A KO or TKO seemed inevitable beginning about midway through the 6th, so the stoppage wasn't a bad one. It seemed very unlikely that Powell would suvive the 7th.
Pre-mature stoppage. I think Latimore would have won, but they stopped the fight way too quickly. Sechew was stunned but only 3 of the last 7 punches landed.
Agree. Fights should be allowed to go to their natural conclusions. Modern refs pull the trigger WAY too easily!
Man Powell dropped his hands and was getting dumped on ... he was getting pummeled and wasn't fighting back. Benjamin Estevez is a good ref and i'm sure that he's seen his share of fights. Powell deserved to get stopped -- only reason why he thought it was a premature stoppage was because he got stopped in his hometown. I've seen worse stoppages than that ... Its a shame that Powell didn't try to use his experience and his more fine tuned skills to beat this guy technically ... I think that Powell isn't championship material and has to re-evaluate his status as a championship contender.
This was no worse than any other ref-initiated TKO stoppage. Like you said, modern refs tend to jump in quickly - it is what it is. For nervousxtian to single this one out as especially bad, compared to the status quo, is silly.
