I'm a southpaw and I've been boxing about 2 years 8 months but so far my jab has only been a set-up punch. I'm 5ft7 and box at 63kg so I'm not tall for my weight, I'm quite powerful with all of my punches but I still can only use the jab as a set-up punch. I think it would help me alot if I could start catching guys with my jab, does anyone have any tips of how to develop a really snappy jab which can catch a guy any time?

I'd also like some tips on this (though I'm quite a bit taller)

I'd like to make my opponents respect my jab - not just be able to walk through it

Any techniques to bear in mind / exercies (other than heavy bag, shadowboxing with weights etc) that you think would help?

@ Boxinglad, I suggest learning to throw the jab from different angles

Oh, guys respect my jab, it's powerful, but it's just not sharp. Recently I've been throwing a sort of jab with my hand side on which gets through the guard but with less power.

Start throwing a medicine ball with your jabbing hand and try to keep your technique perfect while doing it. Also just practice throwing it and bringing your hand back as quick as you threw it out

I'm a right handed southpaw, so my jab is like a regular punch :D

Yeh the Winky Wright tip is excellent, imagine having his peekabo style with such an effective jab in the amateur ranks.

    Somethings to remember when jabbing;

Distribute your weight on to your front foot
Twist your hip (in your case anti-clockwise) as you throw it, alot of people don't do this.
Try and replicate a 'spearing' motion before connection, your elbow should snap (not literally) in a sense before you land.

Of course remember to have that robotic defensive thinking as soon as you land though, bring back straight away and get out of range.

Are you saying this for every jab?

you don't have to do it for every jab, but whenever you want to get some nice pop in it. I do it like 30-40% of the time. I also like to step in with my jab

Watch how Floyd pushes off the back foot and steps in with his front as he's throwing it. It's great for me personally because I can attack from out of range.
But make sure to practice this over and over and the practice the footwork involved if you decide to pick this up

an important part of a good jab is how you use your jab.

you can use it to check distance, to set something up, to hurt

of course some jabs are better for different situations.

distance is important to a good jab, work distance and your jab will have a higher top speed at impact.

definaltly put your hip into like every jab, you dont always have to step with the jab but as said before that really depends on the situation.

tofu and bballchump defiantly the best posts in the thread.
