I agree, when that idiot Max started yammering on about how Lockett was basically a bum and the mic was going through the PA system, I was thinking that I'd never seen anything so crass. What an *******, HBO should put a leash on that dog.:-(
Bingo thats my point. I'm all for cleaning out divisions and fighting lesser known but solid competition, but don't really understand why Pavlik is being called upon to do it when nobody else is by HBO (goes for Roy, Floyd, etc).
i also noticed that fitz was pretty much saying how it would be nice to see pavlik do it also, but yet he'll defend floyd till the day he dies that floyd didnt need to do it.atsch
This is kind of Kellerman's gimmick...pseudo hard hitting reporter guy. He bitched about Calzaghe, Hatton, Gamboa so on so forth.
I think the point HBO was trying to get across, which they made, was that Pavlik was obviously in a different class above Lockett. It was apparent from the first round. It was almost as bad as the Gomez vs Cotto fight. But they made it clear that Lockett was a mandatory for Kelly. They asked the same question to Cotto after he won against Gomez... who would you like to fight next... Are you going to call someone out or are you just going to put it in the hands of your promoters.
I'd like to see Pav fight A.A. and W.W., sooner rather than later. Preferably Winky first since time is not on his side.
Floyd is 12 yrs into the game and Pavlik is having his first run at a championship after 7yrs in the game ... those are two different fighters in two different situations. The MW scene is there for the taking and he can rack up a ton of defenses to help his case for bigger fights down the road. He's only 26 and shows improvement every time he steps into the ring ... he's doing things that people haven't been accustomed to seeing him do in the past.
Yeah you have guys like Winky, Sturm, and Abraham there to fight ... those are big fights ... then you have guys like Mora who may have a decent enough name if he ever chooses to campaign at MW again. Combine those fights with some good mandatory defenses ... and you have yourself a sure fire star.
so you're saying just b/c FLoyd has been in the game longer, he is no longer obligated to clean out divisions. that's a bunch of BS. As long as you're a fighter, you should be cleaning out division and looking for tough fights. You're pretty much saying that once a fighter reaches the top, he doesnt have to do anything anymore. You're saying they should never push themselves. Fitz, you are being ridiculous man.
So at what point in Floyd's career in your opinion did it become ok to be about the money and not cleaning a division out... was it the years 8-12? I mean seriously, what is the distinction here because Pavlik already has his belts in a great historic division. Why shouldn't it just be about the money to him?
Winky, Abraham, & Sturm??? Well, Floyd had Cotto, margarito, paul williams, & clottey. those were great fights for floyd as well. but like you said, just b/che had been fighting for 12 years, he was exempt from these fights. after he defeated gatti, baldomir, & DLH, he no longer had to prove himself.
ACB, i dont understand fitz's reasoning at all. it seems that everyone else in the world must fight everyone, except FLoyd. How can you be a fan of someone and not want them to fight the best every time out.
Don't take what I said out of context ... I was just saying that the window for Pavlik to rack up title fights is more open since he's younger than FLoyd ... Floyd reigned during 130 and 135 ... once Pavlik begins to reign that will open the door for big fights and give him some clout. I would love to see Pavlik clean out the division ... I wanted to see Taylor do it ... why not ... he can make tons of money doing it and add more title defenses/ title fights on his resume. Not many people count linear title fights as actual title fights ... there has to be belts involved.
Once he won his 5 weight class championship ... once he became the best fighter in the world p4p ... (Floyd) Pavlik made 3 mil fighting Lockett ... the money is there and many other opportunities are there ... this guy can bring boxing back to non cable stations ... Boxing can be back on ABC again because of this man ... He has a nice enough time frame to reign at MW for as long his body allows him to and it seems like Pavlik can easily make the weight. Its cool to see a fight between him and Calzaghe but Calzaghe is on his way out of the game and i'm not sure where the fight would take place ... it would be good at a catch weight for a non title bout ... but I personally want to see Pavlik reign at MW. This has nothing to do with Floyd ... Floyd had moments during his career when he reigned ... 130 & 135 ... Once he started jumping divisions was when that reigning **** got thrown out the window. Let me do a bit of name dropping - Pacquiao ... there's no way that Pac should reign at lightweight ... if he wins with relative ease ... then he should move up ... he's been in the game for quite some time and his window for racking up defenses isn't that wide if that were the case there wouldn't be a point to go up in weight. Pavlik has a while before he can start jumping weight classes ...
