No he wasn't but what could those guys have done? ... those guys have the chance to make a name for themselves w/o Floyd ... those guys weren't even on top when Floyd was on his way up ... They (for the exception of Cotto) aren't that accomplished or don't have much fan fair and can't generate much of anything in a fight with Floyd. They can't add to his prestige and they can't make his pockets fatter ... He doesn't have to prove himself ... he paid his dues during his career ... where was Cotto at when Floyd first became a champion ... Floyd is looking to fight guys that have a name and that were around when he was on his way up and that are proven ... and accomplished. You wouldn't give much thought about Floyd fighting Williams a guy who has only 3 title fights and is 2-1 ... a guy who has yet to have a successful reign ... now if Floyd fought him and beat him you would just be like you were when Williams lost to Quintana ... If Floyd fought Margarito and beat him ... then hey Floyd beat a bum with 5 losses on his record. If Floyd fights Clottey ... then he beat a guy that never accomplished anything and shouldn't have been in the ring with Mayweather ... Mayweather over the years has been held to a higher standard ... he's been in more championship fights than all those guys combined and wouldn't get much respect beating any of those guys. It has been created that these guys can beat Mayweather but when ever they get a chance to state their case they get picked off ... that doesn't make any sense to fight them. Pavlik has a chance to have a legit reign during his first championship run ... Two totally different situations ...
Here it is, I knew if I just let you talk about Floyd you would prove our point. So why should Pavlik give anyone a chance to make a name for themselves w/o Pavlik. CLEAR. DOUBLE. STANDARD.
168. Talks in the works according to a front page article. I've started a thread. It would have to be soon for Cal's titles to not be vacated I would think. Well the conventional ABC's. Ring should still be there.
First, I'm not one of those fans who would say Floyd didnt beat anyone by defeating Marg, Williams, etc... I firmly beleive that the champ (if he is staying at his weight class) should fight the top fighters in the class regardless of what they have accomplished. If you're going to be welter, then you need to fight the other top welters, plain and simple. No one is above this. If you are a fighter, then you fight, period. it's ok to make money. in the position floyd was it, he was going to make at least 10mil per fight anyway, no matter who he fought. just b/c he paid his dues doesnt excuse from continuing to fight the best fighters, not the best names. DLH & hatton were the best name/money fighters for floyd, but not the best available fighters for FLoyd. i'm a cotto fan, but moreso a boxing fan. if cotto went on and unified at welter and then decided to go to 154 to fight the best, personally i would want him to unify there as well. what i'm saying is that no matter who i am a fan of, i always want them to fight the best for as long as they are fighting. the more you fight the best, the more money you make. so to say that Floyd's pockets wouldnt get fatter by fighting Cotto/marg is ridiculous. he definitely make at least 10-15 mill for each of those guys.
No one's going to make their name off of Pavlik ... he's more talented ... but it is legit to have some kinda reign and establish some clout ... you want him to do so much after having only 1 title defense of his first title ... let this man rack up some defenses first. The money is there ... He said that he wants to stay at MW until it becomes a problem making weight. I think that its only fair that he fights some mandatories ... fight some unification bouts (optional) and them make a case against guys in higher divisions. Calzaghe has been in the game for about 15 yrs ... he wants to fight guys from his era on his experience level ... No one even knows what weight that Calzaghe is going to fight at ... it may be assumed that it will be light heavy ... now why would Pavlik go straight from MW to light heavy after only 1 title defense? When there's Abraham who has 10 defenses of his title ... Sturm who has won his version of the title 3 times ... Winky Wright who's looking to get a title at MW ... or Mora (undefeated) or undefeated John Duddy (who can make Pavlik alot of dough - being from Ireland and fighting on the east coast where there's alot of Irish natives and decendants) Andy Lee ... Brian Vera ... Castillejo ... Paul Smith ... undefeated and was on the contender ...
Also, Fitz...there is another big problem I have with your view of FLoyd and his greatness. you believe he is the greatest of all time. Ok, cool. You say that chances are that no one for years to come will ever approach what he has done...Cool!!! Here, we have Miguel Cotto, a great young fighter in his own right. Hypothetically speaking, if Cotto went on to dominate 147 and 154, unifying both divisions, he would definitely become an ATG. However, by your standards, he could never be as good as Floyd. In your eyes, unless a fighter goes on to accomplish more than floyd as far as titles are concerned, they will never be better than him. The problem is though rather than us fans arguing about it, we actually should have the opportunity to see these amazing fighters fight to actually settle this debate. it's just like leonard, hagler, hearns, duran, etc...they decided who was the greater fighter between them all by fighting it out, not by self-proclamation.
Bro the hell with talking about Floyd ... i'm trying to get my point across to you about why I would like to see Pavlik make some defenses of his title. Not to compare Floyd and Pavlik's situation ... I don't give a **** anymore ... Floyd as of Friday is retired bro ... he's done ... whatever couldve been is all talk and all mythical right now. He did what he did during his career and now its over ... **** talking about him ... I regret that you mentioned anything about it bro. I didn't intend on the discussion being like this ... I'm trying to explain what I thought about concerning Max Kellerman and what he said to Pavlik last night ... and I agree with Max I also think that Max did his best job as an analyst on HBO ... I loved his commentary. I liked that Baseball analogy ... I liked that he kept in mind that there were other MW fighters out there for him to fight.
so let me see if i understand you fitz. once you've reasonably made a name for yourself in the sport, it's ok to go on in the sport just to make money? so if pavlik or cotto unifies the division and then wins another title or 2, he will no longer have to take challenging fights? Manny P no longer needs to take challenging fights? so, let's see...once you've won maybe 4 belts (is that enough for you), you dont have to fight the absolute best. is this what you are saying? b-hop, joe c, DLH, Shane, Winky....all these guys have always fought the best competition out there till the end. i guess they are idiots b/c they dont think like floyd does.
oh, well you dont have to get your point across for pavlik unifying b/c i'm with you there man. i would love every champion to unify their division.
Pavlik is in a different situation than Cotto ... Cotto has 10 championship fights already. He has 2 division championships ... he managed to get a top 5 p4p ranking ... Now Cotto is on a high level right now ... but he still has some things to do before he can reach the level of a Pac or a Floyd ... Pavlik just won his title last year and had his first title defense last night. What grants him a fight with Calzaghe right now? I think he can beat Calzaghe but Calzaghe is on a different level right now. Pavlik only beat 1 champion ... what am i typing that you don't get man?
Pavlik is one of the few fighters Kellerman can talk brave against and still show his face at the club
i'm not talking about pavlik's situation. i want him to fight anyone and everyone, especially if it leads to unification. i'm just talking about the fact that you make it seem like once a fighter reaches a certain level, he is excused from fighting the top fighters. you make it seem as if they are allowed to solely go after big money fights that dont force them to risk a defeat.
Max' style of interviewing is more akin to Jim Rome then Bob Costas. He'll say things that SOUND provocative, but really aren't.
