I like Selby, can't wait to see him back and I hope he does carry more power at the new weight. I'm sceptical though, Martin Murray said the same thing when he moved up from MW and didn't seem to carry any increased power. Also hopefully Andrew Selby can sort his issues out and get back in the ring.
I like Selby too and that was a pretty honest interview, he very openly accepted he lost when it was only an SD and he could have try to make the case he was unlucky. So I'm inclined to believe him when he says the weight was an issue - let's face it he had been poor for 3-4 fights not just the Warrington one, so there's a trend which suggests he was struggling. So maybe he will find some snap at LW...
I think he needs to. At these lower weights the jump is not THAT high even two divisions. Jamie McDonnell is also rumoured to be set to jump two divisions when he eventually jumps up. Selby and McDonnell are both huge at 5’9” and 5’10” respectively. I think they need to make these jumps for their health.
They're set that close together for a reason, though. On paper the jump may not seem much but jumping 130-135 isn't as inconsequential a thing as jumping 230-235, proportionately.
The thing is when you are 5’10”, a 2lb increase in weight can be achieved by one day of eating junk food. These guys are not kids anymore, it’s not healthy to stay at such a low weight at their ages anymore. Especially in McDonnell’s case. The relief in training camp from not having to restrict calories so much will probably make a major difference in everything from mood to athletic performance. Time will tell.
Except that Lee Selby is 5′ 8½″ tall, and 31 years old, and has consistently fought at 126lbs for eight years in a row. He actually debuted at lightweight and worked his way down from 2008 until 2010 (with a pit stop at super feather) so really he's just now returning to his weight from when he was a "kid". I think Lee Selby in any kind of fighting shape is going to still be a lightweight or a 140lber, max. If making weight had been that hard since 2010 he would have missed it more often, else moved up sooner.
