I have seen the fight and heard the allegation and I would agree that it appears Seldon took a dive. I still have a few questions: 1. Has there been any proof that he took a dive besides the fight footage? 2. What motivation would there be for asking Seldon to take a dive? 3. Did Tyson's handlers not believe he could legitimatily beat Bruce Seldon?
2. He was terrified of the Tyson’s power. He didn’t plan to take a dive but his nerves got a best of him. 3. Tyson handlers didn’t have anything to do witch that
I really don't understand the singular blame that gets heaped on Seldon for quitting against Tyson. As if he was the first fighter to be intimidated by a larger than life heavyweight, whether it was Dempsey, Louis or Tyson himself.
It hurts him that he did it in the color television era, with highly expensive ppv costs raising expectations, but that was an awful quit job.
Tyson gets a ko on a miss punch. I not saying it was a fix or dive, we all know it wasnt. But its on pair with Liston quiting against Ali. Only Seldon did it before the end of the bell round. I dont put much stock into Seldon quitting. IT still leaves a bad taste in my mouth as I paid a lot of money for that PPV, what was it?? 49 95?? About?? And Seldon just walks in and takes a nap in 1 round.
Plain and simple facts...... Bruce Seldon did not have the mechanics to beat Mike, he was scared to death by the Hype and had never been in a place like that before.. he was paid well and even though he wanted no part of Mike , the cash was too much to turn down... Bruce showed up to do a scramble and run job, until he could run no more and escape via the fastest and painless route he could find.. He found it very early when he was caught by a completely mythical shot (unknown to him at the time) and he opted for the referee stops contest route, because Bruce failed to convince the man in charge that he was able to continue.. Bruce was fine but wanted to exit with his life , rather than his pride in tact.. The fight was not something that was set up or anything, Bruce just had personal demons , and he came to swallow it and stink the place out.. He did it sadly on a very public stage in front of a gigantic worldwide audience...
............I was working in Phoenix at the time, and this fella I worked with invited a few of us over to his place to watch it. He made an event out of it, threw burgers on the grill, had a cooler full of beer, the works. Made an evening of it. The bell rings, Tyson swings and perhaps misses, and Seldon crumbles like a house of cards. He turns from his easy chair and says "Well.........thanks for swinging by, everyone."
[YT]lsf36OuULko[/YT] Pre fight build up where Seldon talks about making opponents quit...... [YT]ZnuxGRMzSzg[/YT] Seldon was scared to death and was initially floored by a punch that went over the top of his head. I think that Seldon just didn't want to know - he talked a good fight but didn't deliver on the night. Tyson had some strange fights back then. Anyone remember McNeely jumping about and celebrating after getting stopped in a round??
Actually, Liston may well have quit in the rematch and he did it before the bell of the first round. Of course it may have been because of death threats, but the possibility that he thought he couldn't beat Ali and gave up is a realistic one. He certainly thought Ali was a mad man and looked terrified as Ali came for him when Walcott was having a casual talk with Fleischer. I can't find the picture now, but i'll post it as i get home.
I think he just caught something spurious behind his ear that lost his equilibrium. Seldon just wasnt very durable as Bowe had shown years earlier and punches that catch u behind ur ear even poorly connecting 1s can make u do the chicken dance
