ok for about five months ive been self training. at the start i watched video apon video a tried my best to get it right on techniques now im just training and praticinf. im not nesarily trying to compete just protect my self in school[highschool] and on the street so do you think i can become ok for just self defense.
alkso there is a boxing gym near me but its in one of the most dangerous cities in the us and my mom said she wouldnt let me go there or drive there.

i tried self training myself, then finally went to a gym. Self training wont do anything at all im sorry to say. I'd look up youtube videos eachday practice but once i stepped into the gym, i learned more the first day than the whole 2 years i self trained myself. You think you understand everything but once you get into the gym the way you see boxing is completely different.

the thing is if you really want to learn you have to do these things, like go to that city etc. I found myself driving more than half an hour just to get to my old gym. Being a guy with no job not making much money and was hard for me to just even drive that long and to pay 90 dollars a month for that gym.

so no sparring then? the workouts will definitely get you fitter, but without sparring, it won't have much value as self-defense.

I'm sure jail will be splendid after getting your ass kicked with nothing but two broken hands to show for it.

Boxing isn't for self defense, it's a sport. If I hit anyone in the head without gloves/wraps, I would shatter my hand because I'm trained to fight with gloves. There's a reason bareknuckle boxing was a lot of hugging/throwing/bodyshots and almost no power punches to the head.

itll do close to nothing, once your adrenalyn gets going you rely on instincts and you wont be throwing straight punches. if you dont constantly sparr , train for a good hour or two with a heavy bag/double end bag/speed bag etc it wont do you much trust me. Not to be an ******* or anything but i've done this whole self trained thing, then when i first sparred i turned into what i was before i even started self training myself. Your technique will be off, itll be weird, it wont be anywhere close and you'll be better off doing a martial art or learner to sprint fast to avoid trouble.

for just self defence, no you'll be exactly how you are. Your better off doing a martial art or learning to punch the guy in the nuts. Wait till you start driving, my parents never approved of me boxing but never stopped me. They also would never drive me there, so i drove myself once i got my license.

Does no one think you can get to a decent basic level training yourself? Attention to detail is different in every individual ! Some know when there doing stuff wrong even when self trained so they keep practicing ! some guys are deluded and don't realise there doing stuff and why there doing it wrong ! All depends on the person IMO as long as they have a basic understanding of why and how to do it don't see why basics can't be learnt?

I think you are overlooking things a bit to much? His not saying by training himself his going to be like floyd mayweather lol ! But by self-training when he eventually gets to gym he will have the basic stance, footwork punches etc ! So he should be a little ahead of a guy walking into the gym with no-self training? Plus from self-training he should be able to pick things up quicker once his in a boxing gym?
