That's using the 88 version of Holmes' reflexes. Go back and look at the 78 version of the guy. I do think Tyson would beat Larry 2 out of 3 times. But he sure isn't beating him 3 out of 3. This isn't a Tyrell biggs or Trevor Berbick type opponent. One time he'd be not up to stuff and Larry would use that jab and footwork to turn him & score the points/outsmart him for the win.
I doubt it. Tyson cleaned out so many guys who shared stylistic similarities with Holmes and Ali. I think he'd be well prepared for either. Pink didn't seem to get anywhere with Tyson either despite the great jab and boxer-puncher style.
only ali and foreman would stand against PRIME tyson. joe louis's style is way too stationary and comeforeward and he'd just be eating leather the entire time. tyson is the more advanced version of dempsey with bigger and better stylistic attributes. dempsey wouldn't last more than one round. johnson is used to fighting guys who threw one punch at a time and he's never seen anyone like tyson, he's seen guys as rugged as tyson, but none of them threw fluid combinations followed up with bone crushing power, head movement and defense. fighter's didn't start throwing fluid combinations until probably the 30s or the late 20s.
Head to head against anyone I'm putting Tyson at even odds or better. Can't say that about any other heavyweight. You'll need someone with the speed, skill and chin of Ali combined with the firepower and presence of Foreman. Only person close to that might be Bowe.
I disagree wholeheartedly about comparing any of the Tyson opponents like a shot Pinky Thomas to Ali and Holmes. You must think a lot more of Trevor Berbick and Tony Tucker and Tyrell Biggs and that group than I do. I think they are beatable by lots of guys. Nothing stands out, nothing. Just who do those Tyson victims beat anyway? If they had managed to beat Tyson back then, how long do you think that guy's title defense run is?
Hey amigos, whats with the lack of love for the Legendary Brown Browner Joe Louis? I'm not saying he is a shoe-in for the win but he has only got a passing mention here? He SHOULD be on that list right off the top of anyone's head and then we can debate away but he's on that list no doubt! With these legends its really anyone's guess and all of those guys are so talented and have great strengths - only the ring can settle these match-ups. Yes, Joe he shuffling feet, was rather upright and average defense. But like how most modern day boxing fans think of Tyson as this otherworldly puncher (and he is) above all punchers, well so was Joe Louis. Cracking Schemling's verterbae and giving Buddy Baer a brutal 23 stitches smashing his face up (I'm not talking about competition here but the fact that the Brown Bomber was a natural elite of the elite puncher). Joe also had great educated jab (one of the best, it was a piston) and is still a naturally bigger man than Tyson. Regardless, Tyson has to crowd Joe to fight his usual swarming style , so he has to eat that stiff jab all night. From the other responses on this thread it seems like height + reach+ a good jab+ toughness/decent chin+ some ability to box/use ring generalship+ ability to tie up and neutralize Tyson on the inside is what people are looking for. If thats the case let me put $100 on Louis. A Louis with at least some modern day nutrition and a few of our modern gyms (imagine the condition he could obtain given his genes). Taken from ESPN: Early in Muhammad Ali's reign as champ, he hired Louis as an "adviser" and they appeared together on TV. Ali: "Joe, you really think you coulda whipped me?" Louis: "When I had the title, I went on what they called a bum-of-the-month tour." Ali's: "You mean I'm a bum?" Louis: "You woulda been on the tour." Joe had that champion EGO he would have been a real gamer against Tyson, just saying I'm no biased old timer I'm a modern fan.
1. Pinklon Thomas was a top 5 heavyweight who was pfp a couple years earlier. Not shot. Holmes mysteriously never fought him. 2. Tyson destroyed Spinks, the man who beat Holmes, and Williams, who cut it really close against Holmes.. He also destroyed Holmes, who incidentally would go on to beat Ray Mercer, nearly win a title, and never get stopped again. 3. Ali was the only guy in the 70s with a long title reign. But, it was sprinkled with asterisks due to questionable decisions over young and Norton and an embarrassing loss to Spinks. 4. If Tyson weren't around in the 80s, Spinks and Tucker would probably be the main beltholders. If Pinklon and Tubbs managed to stay motivated, they could also make noise. But who cares? You can define a great era by having the belt get passed around depending on how you slant your viewpoint.
its not so much that i think Tyson is unbeatable its more that i think Tyson at his prime was so quick and powerful he would have a good chance against anyone, i personally think he lost his "prime" desire to be great soon after he won the title.
you would of been on the tour, that cracks me up! yes ok i agree with you about Louis having a good chance,,,, i just don't think Louis ever faced a dude with the power and hand speed of Tyson :bbb
