Burley had 3 x fights in 1950 and was retired by the July of that year. It wouldn't have taken a MW as formidable as Hagler to beat that shot version of Burley, as demonstrated by Charley Williams the year before.

Burley was prime during the early and mid 1940's, when he was utterly brilliant.

What'd you think of a Hagler vs Fullmer fight, John? I think Gene's rough style and constant aggression would be pretty troubling for Hagler - especially the pre title Hagler who had issues with Vito, Briscoe and Hart.

If we are talking pre title he'd be rough, absolutely. I think peak Hagler is just too much for him.

he certainly passes the eye test.

but can I say that back when broadcasts were black and white, the networks needed to somehow mandate trunk colors if you had two fighters with similar skin color? If you’ve got a white dude and a black dude in there, sure, wear what you like. But two white guys? Two black guys? Come on. One wears dark trunks, one wears light trunks. Is it that difficult to have mandated?

With a prime Marvin Hagler fighting at his Marvelous best (not taking his foot off the gas a la Vito Antuofermo first fight) I can't see anyone but Sugar Ray Robinson from that decade beating him.

Hagler was sometimes a bit hit and miss in some of his biggest fights.

1st fight vs Antuofermo Hagler kind of let that fight slip away in later rounds.

The Duran fight was a bit too close and I have no idea why Hagler fought more of a chess match against the smaller man.

The Leonard fight Hagler made some huge tactical errors which cost him the fight.

So whilst Hagler was a consistent performer but in some of his real notable fights big fights he didn't always turn up and fight the best fight.

I think Turpin, Basilio, Fulmer, would all give Hagler a good go and I'm not sure Hagler would go 3-0 against them without maybe taking a loss somewhere needing a rematch.
