What opponent that AJ beat would you send in to massacre the 1938-1942 version of the Brown Bomber? Which AJ victim would turn the Brown Bomber into the Brown Stain on the canvas? Robert Helenius??
Andy Ruiz. He would remind Louis of Galento, except he would be closer to Joe's own height so he would't be a smaller and harder to tag target, so Joe would plan accordingly. Unfortunately for Joe, Ruiz is taller, naturally heavier, and most importantly, fatter than Galento. His belly is less hairy and his skin is far more clear there compared to Galento's, and his chest and shoulders are full of entrancing tatoos. After Joe would start going to the body, the mesmerizing sight of Ruiz's fat rolling throughout his entire body would make Louis lose himself in his own thoughts in order to comprehend the sight in front of him (After all, this would be a very rare visual for a man from the 30's), leaving him to carelessly uppercut himself Fury style and immobilize himself in the proccess. Ruiz by early stoppage.
Wlad Klitschko obviously. Even if we take out the whole AJ part of the scenario hes the modern champ who Louis has the worst odds of beating. Wlad in reign 2 is the guy who won easily no matter who the opponent was. Best combo of size skills and power. Wlad is one of those few champs where when he lost to Fury and AJ he was competitive enough where it feels certain that 5 years earlier he'd have won those fights. Louis v Marciano is another such rare case.
The corpse of Wladimir Klitschko is not beating prime Joe Louis even despite all of the PEDs you could possibly give as an advantage The best chance is Ruiz or Parker, in my opinion. Parker could actually do something if he made it ugly. Louis is, despite the lack of PEDs, the favorite in each of these fights. The actual person who i think confidently beats Louis from this era is Usyk. And that's just his prime version from the 30s. Bring a 25 year old Louis to modern times and put him on designer drugs and peptides and hardcore anabolics with short half lives during the looser testing periods; he'll come in at 220 while still being lightning quick, and will decapitate people.
Wlad's exactly the sort of guy that would give Louis fits. Firstly because he was an elite boxer. Secondly because he is bloody huge. Third because stylistically he has light feet and uses his size to absolutely maximise the distance the other guy has to cross to get to him. Louis was a blistering combination puncher but he used to set his feet to punch and anybody small with lead feet against Wlad is SOL. The AJ version of Wlad was old, sure, but he'd worked on his agility for that one and he looked lighter on his feet than he'd looked for ages. Moreover he showed a lot of grit and was in a good mental space. In my opinion Louis is rowing upstream here, being much the smaller guy with a specific stylistic disadvantage.
Because 1. He's the best current heavyweight and 2. He doesn't stop moving, he wouldn't give Louis any good openings, and if Louis does land, Usyk has the chin to take it a few times. He has that probing jab and an excellent sense of distance, and doesn't overcommit to anything. He would pick Louis off at long range.
I feel Usyk's main edge is his footwork and ability to keep turning an opponent. Louis had somewhat static feet, having to constantly reset himself to unload would disrupt his style. That said I will say that Louis had some fast hands, and that is helpful against a boxer like Usyk that tries to be too clever. Unfortunately I get the feeling that either Usyk or his team gameplan extensively for his opponents and would work out a strategy to deal with Louis.
