Send them in 1 by 1 or 2 by 2 or in whatever quantity you want. Which light heavyweight do you think could beat prime Dempsey? Could Bob Foster and his left hook do it? Could Ezzard Charles outbox him? Could Michael Spinks befuddle him? Could Matt Franklin Muhammad out punch him?

I would first send in a really strong, tough light heavy like Franklin or Beterbiev. They would take a few shots and feint it out for a couple of seconds. Then I would take a really sneaky, really devious fellow like an Archie Moore or Jones to silently enter the ring and grab Dempsey from the back when the ref wasnt looking. Having done so then either Franklin or Beterbiev, preferably both of them together in the ideal scenario, would pound on Dempsey while immobilized. A round 1 ko

Charles, Langford, Fitzsimmons, Tunney, Moore and Spinks would have decent chances.

He was pretty scared of Sam Langford when he was younger. I think Sam's chances are not less than around 50%. I'll pick Sam weighing 175 to beat Dempsey, sure.

At that stage of his career I'd say he was being sensible.

Well at the same stage of his career Harry Wills fought Langford and did well. Maybe Dempsey developed at a different rate.

But Langford remains my pick. I think he could do 175 and knock Dempsey out.

To be frank, I think there's about 10 who could beat him whilst weighing 175lbs. Guys like Spinks, Loughran, Tunney, Moore, Foster, Lewis, Charles etc; should win vs Dempsey, if Dempsey was young enough to make 175.

I'd only pick Charles to beat a HW Dempsey. Tunney and Spinks are live underdogs.

Dempsey turned down a match with Langford in May 1916 he was 20 years old with27 fights under his belt.
Wills was a month off 29years old when he finally stopped Langford and he had 47 fights on his record.
Proof that Dempsey wasnt ready for Langford at that stage is that he caved into pressure from his bloodsucker manager John Reisler and fought John Lester Johnson instead, absorbing a bad body beating.
Langford would probably have ruined him.
Langford is the only man at175lbs I'd give a reasonable chance with Dempsey.and also Marciano where I think his chances would be better. Being black Wills probably had less choices about his opponents than Dempsey. Randy Roberts says Dempsey got $100 for his broken ribs against Johnson. As I said, Dempsey was sensible to avoid Langford who still had full functioning eyesight in1916.

Outright ducked him, but probably wasn't ready for him, I agree.

Wills probably wasn't "ready for him" either listed at 14-1-2 when he took on Langford. It's recorded now as a Newspaper draw, but in reality, newspaperman saw a win for WIlls - others for Langford.

Of course both Dempsey and Wills had more fights than were listed, but I think that the fact that Dempsey turned down Langford when he was basically sleeping rough (as i remember it) is telling. He must have been legitimately frightened.

Wills of course, takes him on and does rather well.

You made the distinction that they were at the same stages of their careers when Dempsey avoided Langford and when Wills stopped Langford. It is incorrect and the old saw well their records are probably not accurate works both ways ,plus Dempsey was a skinny 20 year old and Wills was nearly29.

Moore and Charles have a chance to outbox him. Roy Jones and Toney would be interesting as well.

I don't think there's any I'd favour to beat Dempsey whilst weighing as a LHW.

In terms of the best chances though

Langford and Fitzsimmons have a chance to counter and knock him out.

Greb has as good a chance as any up close.

Loughran, Charles might do a job on the outside.

Would be amazing to see if he could cope with the offence if Qawi also.
