Prime Mercer (before he got old and past it) had poor defense but you could hit him with a baseball bat and he’s going nowhere. Best chin I ever saw. I think early 90s version lasts the distance with anyone.

Maybe it was a slip I that fight that you're thinking of ... I haven't watched it in years ... the only Cobb knockdown I know of on film is this one vs Eddie Gregg ....

. ( 5:46 ) ... at this point in Cobb's career he was supposedly a mess outside of the ring ..

Cobb does come to mind, but the thought of the Brown Bomber landing multiple combos on him round after round doesn't give me any confidence he'd hear the bell . Holmes couldn't finish Tex but he's not the assassin that Louis was. I d say Cobb stays on his stool after the 10th.

    The usual list:

McCall, Brewster, Puritty, Mercer, Foreman, Tua.

In recent times Chisora and Joyce.

I agree @Reinhardt that Holmes wasn't the puncher that Louis was but I think sometimes people overlook that Holmes had 15 stoppages in 20 of his world title fights. I also believe he had a run of like 8 stoppages in a row in world title fights which must rank quite highly in regards to consecutive stoppages in world title fights.

Cobb once claimed he'd been knocked out by a Mexican lightweight. He said three of his buddies grabbed the guy by his ankles, swung him around and hit him with him when he wasn't looking...

    No, not crazy.

There was a point during the Shavers when Cobb was literally hit and went down a nano sec later.

However it was ruled a slip - though I’m not 100% sure that Shavers punch didn’t at least cause partial fail in Cobb’s leg.

To vindicate the ruling of a slip, the canvas was clearly slippery effecting both men but something which probably hurt Shavers more since the lack of traction took from the greater leverage that Shavers could’ve had on his punches.

I’d love to see the Collier fight - I think I read that footage does exist but I’m not 100%.

Thanks for that. I'll comb through the fight again soon to pinpoint the round- I guess this is kinda like the Sims-Duran knockdown thing.

I honestly thought it just came to me in a dream or something, since I could remember it so vividly, but when I checked the early rounds, I couldn't find anything.

I've tried to find the Collier fight and can't seem to anywhere ... the only thing possibly suspicious is that it came right after the Gregg fight where Cobb suffered his first official knockdown .. the rumors were Cobb was heavily into drugs, partying and broke so if he took a dive or came not the ring in Beverly compromised condition is anyone's guess ... it is one of those boxing who knows .... would lie to see the film as the description seems more than a little bit shocking,

    Cheers for the link.

Yeah, I remember the fight description including Cobb making repeated requests for the fight not to be stopped - which at least on face value appears to add authenticity.

Even when legit, anytime a previously unbreakable chin suddenly falls apart, people will ask questions - but ironically, the actual proving of a great chin can lend to its erosion and eventual collapse - and I think we at least saw that ultimately happen with Joe Joyce - but in Joyce’s case we have the vision and it’s irrefutably legit.
