Send in your light heavyweight to beat prime Jack Dempsey

Remember Johnson broke the jaw of Victor Galindez on Nov 30 1979, Johnson won by KO 11. And who can forget those wars between Matthew Saad Muhammad and Marvin (Pops) Johnson.

In all the responses thus far I see no mention of whether you are including any modern, rehydrated LHWs.
They could easily weigh as much or more than Dempsey in the ring when lean-or more.
Dempsey who weighed 187 when he took the title & is presumed to have been at his peak before becoming more inactive.

I think many could beat him near or over 190 lbs.

Having to fight AT the LHW limit would be much tougher-even then I think a few might do it.
But which do you mean?

 

I was thinking a guy like Beterbiev might well weigh 185+ in the ring. I just watched the Yarde and Smith fights again. You know, I think he might even do it.

 

Maybe! But I am still waiting for the OP to tell me if he permits someone to weigh 185, 195-or prospectively even more, some rehydrate to well over 10% although it is unusual.

Agree with this re the overrated/underrated opinion. Jack in his prime was an absolute beast and it seems almost trendy to knock him.

 

Actually Franklin, Jones was brutally kod by not great punching Glen Johnson just a few months after Tarver kod him, so he was clearly well past it at that stage. Having written that, I personally believe prime Dempsey would have knocked any version of Jones the **** out.

 

Then I think many could & some would beat him.
More so if we accept guys that *could* get down to LHW by fight time, but that is another story.

 

Oh I agree that he was past his prime. No question about it. The issue is HOW much past his prime was in in the Tarver fights. WAY past, it, KINDA past it, and just past it. I don't think he was at the Joe Louis-Marciano level yet.
