Hearn has been on Boxing Social telling them that they as a platform wouldn't be here without Anthony Joshua...also said the same of Matchroom's success. He went on to say that "He made boxing as big as it is and we all need to be thankful"...and that YouTubers and YouTube outlets would have no interest in getting involved in the sport if not for Anthony Joshua. As the title suggests, quite sensational stuff, even for Eddie. Ought to catch himself on a bit
Eddie has been on a rant lately, spewing nonsense all over the place. I think he's more than a bit worried that his money horse, AJ, is going to lay an egg this weekend. That might make fights vs Wilder or Fury moot, or at least make less money. In fact, AJ might descend into the Kownacki level of HW's with a bad looking loss.
Win or lose vs Usyk, AJ vs Fury or Wilder would still be huge. But he’s not beating those two neither though.
England wouldn't exist without AJ. Have the BBC say it enough and the masses will probably vote him in as Prime Minister in ten years.
Well he did carry the ball for a little bit, this is far from the wildest claim made by a promoter. Of course he dropped the ball a couple of times when he wasn't supposed to, but he did carry it too.
"He made boxing as big as it is and we all need to be thankful"... That's the kind of thing you'd expect Hearn to say after Joshua loses and retires. He's giving away his lack of confidence here. Also it's not true. Yeah, Joshua brought eyeballs but so did Mayweather, Manny, Canelo, Khan, GGG, Fury, Wilder... even Broner Boxing will be fine post-AJ...
AJ leaves sky for DAZN but according to Eddie its sky who are in the wrong for not showing enough support. Where does he get this crazy logic from?
A boxing fan posting about it on a boxing forum??????? I don't think he was ever this stand alone figure propping up the sport. Far away from that actually in my eyes. He was probably the biggest driving force for it in UK terms for a bit before Fury taking over, but also had good support from the likes of Froch-Groves, Frampton, then Warrington and others. Eddie just overestimates it wildly with saying things like he did in my opinion. I was cringing through the interview
I believe, when he was defending Joshua, he said they made boxing as big as it is in the UK ... And believe Hearn is right about that. I've been watching boxing since the mid 70s. Hearn and Joshua made UK boxing and its shows more important than it ever was to my memory. I just think Hearn thought he could just take his big bankroll and take over the US as well. And it never happened. He just didn't understand the market or which fighters should fight in front of which audiences. But it's difficult to ignore his success in the UK. I think some fans forgot how lowly UK boxing was viewed basically for the entire 20th cenntury or so. Hell, Germany was the biggest European boxing nation for the first decade or so of THIS century. UK fans could only dream of drawing fans in the number that Klitschkos were doing in the early 2000s. But Hearn surpassed those figures. Hearn has done a great job for boxing in the UK. He's still a relatively young guy. Maybe he'll figure out the US marketplace at some point.
No doubt Hearn has been major for British boxing, not disputing that at all. Great promoter who I would back to have big success in the USA also. However to tell all the media channels that they nor his own company would exist without Joshua. That YouTubers wouldn't have come near the sport in general without Joshua, that boxing essentially owes him, that's what I'm disputing. Too far. Sensationalism.
