Canelo vs. Plant Discussions Playing Out For September, Says Hearn

BY ******* STAFF
Published Fri Jul 02, 2021, 03:46 AM EDT
Promoter Eddie Hearn, who works with WBO, WBA, WBC super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, is still trying to work out a potential fall unification with IBF champion Caleb Plant.

Back in May, Canelo unified three of the four major titles at 168-pounds, when he stopped Billy Joe Saunders before a crowd of over 70,000 fans in Texas. It was Canelo's third fight since December of last year.

Canelo's goal is to fight in the month of September - and Plant is the frontrunner to face him.

But, the negotiations to make that fight are playing out slower than anticipated - which may force Canelo and Hearn to explore alternative options if a deal is not finalized in a timely manner.

”[Regarding Plant], there's conversations to be had over the next sort of three, four, or five days, and it needs to gather pace. I don't think there's anything negative to say about it. This is clearly the fight Canelo Alvarez wants. He wants to become undisputed champion. But at the same time, September is his date, you know, and if the Plant fight’s not available now and has to be made in December or whatever, I think Canelo's mindset is: ‘I want to keep the momentum that I have right now,’" Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show.

“And you know, let's not forget this guy's boxed three times in, you know, what, seven months, eight months, and it will be four flights in 10 months, which as a pound-for-pound number one in a pandemic is incredible.

“My instructions from Canelo, Alvarez, and Eddy Reynoso were, you know, what we want, we want Caleb Plant, but if that's not possible for September, show me the champions we can face. Clearly, a move up to 175, for now, is also on the agenda if that undisputed fight can't get made.”

Plant wants $15,000,000

He knows he will lose so why not cash out? It is a unification fight after all and the box office numbers will be huge.

Will DAZN agree? It's alot of outlay to give to a guy with only one belt, zero can base and little marketability.

If the Plant fight does not happen just go straight for Beterbiev. If Canelo takes it, mad props to him even though he'll get his face punched in.

It's not like he'll lose his 168lbs and Plant can still keep his belt warm for a unification fight in May 2022. Canelo will need all the time off to recover from Beterbiev assaulting him.

15milly!?
Plant is insane
He won’t get that.
Thought he wanted 10milly…

Canelo will fight Beterbiev for sure.
He has the youth advantage.

Yup, Plant is playing hard ball.

Canelo really wants that title and DAZN may up their offer. Everyone wants that retirement money that Canelo brings to the table.

This fight makes sense from a divisional, financial, and legacy perspective, but I really wish Plant would have faced Benavidez before this. Both of those guys need world level competition before taking on someone like Alvarez.

Can't blame Plant. He should try and maximize his profit. After all, a Canelo fight will bring in a lot of money.

Plant is ripe for the picking (get it?) so I don't blame him for cashing out, but he's being too aggressive if he's actually asking for $15M. He isn't as good or nearly high profile as BJS.

All he is doing is correct, also if he had asked even for $16M.
Canelo needs to be an absolutely undisputed champion in 1 division, then most likely he might have all 4 major most well known orgs belt and The Ring belt.
With this he might achieve big step as historically valuable achievement for his legacy. Cos this he does knows how damn valuable is this fight for Canelo and that this fight will really generate enough money to pay his and Canelo purses with a glance. Promoters too will be happy.
PR and sales ppl will sell this fight better than fight vs BJS by advertising this as fight for undisputed. I they knows their job.
HW undisputed looks that we will not see this year, something still should be sold and there it is.

Look I like Plant as a boxer and this has been the fight Ive wanted all along but, do want the fight or not.

How hard can you make negotiations as the D side in the biggest opportunity you will ever get in your professional career.

At some point it becomes clear youre not serious n time for team Canelo to move on.

He is key side not A, B or C or D side.

If Canelo will fight vs Plant and win, he will be Undisputed and this is big value for legacy. Canelo needs this one.
What else he might do? Fight vs someone at 175 lbs and then spent next half year in negotiations vs next opponents at 168 lbs or 175 lbs?

There? 1 fight and Undisputed at 168 lbs if he will beat Plant. It is big, very big difference.
Plant most likely does knows that Canelo prefers older opponents and if he will fought Plant next, he will have the same supposed 175 lbs division opponents in the ring older than if he will fight vs them in september for example.

Pro boxing is business and still, maybe someone thinks that he does have enough money already and not beg for Canelo paychecks like " thank you, you are big name, I don't know why you need to fight vs me ". Plant does knows why.

If Plant signs up or he moves to LHW that's 3 solid opponents plus a marginal guy in 12 months.

When was the last time a champion above bantamweight did more than that? Maybe it was 2019 I have no idea but I'm struggling to come up with something recent.

Hearn putting Plant on the spot. Sure, Plant wants to get as much as possible for a Canelo fight, but if Canelo goes up and faces Beterbiev instead and loses, Plant might not get the chance of such a pay day again. Those are the thoughts Hearn are trying to instill.

Plant is dumb as **** if he out prices himself from this fight. He will still make career high pay , life changing money, and if he wins the boxing world is his. Maybe he is aiming high and realistically looking for 8-10 million range plus some of the PPV.

if he sticks to the 15 million then he never wanted the fight.

Hes obviously playing hardball since they made it clear from the jump that Canelo wanted to be Undisputed. Had they not expressed and emphasis on that he probably would starting at $8-10 million. Also Kovalev getting $12 million and Danny Jacobs getting $15 set the market and what an opponent with a belt would be expecting. It’s risky on Plant’s behalf but business is business us fans hate it but fighters are all about maximizing their profits while they can.

I think it’s just him posturing too and personally I think 15 million is far for a unification fight.
