September 12th, 2009 - night of the mismatches

I'm not saying that Matthew Hatton will win but Lovemore N'Dou is turning 38 in a few days and has a lot of ringwear.

 

Calderon/Mayol borderline mismatches?

Calderon missed losing in their first fight because of the stoppage.

 

my thoughts too, this fight is very winnable for M.Hatton Ndou has 3 losses in his last 5 fights.

 

I have a feeling that Mayol's gonna do real well in the rematch.

Rodel will be the underdog, but with a decent chance to win it, I feel.

 

Calderon/Mayol is a mismatch? atsch

I had the first fight a draw at the time of stoppage and Mayol was doing very good in that fight. This isn't a mismatch and I won't be surprised if Mayol wins it.

 

N'dou loses to top-level fighters. Those 3 losses are to good opponents.. champions/former-champions/title-contenders . Matthew Hatton is not any of that. He is not even decent.

 

How good does he have to be to beat a guy who, as you have ilustrated, is essentially a tough gatekeeper and a faded one at that. Like I said, I'm not necessarily saying that Hatton can win but you gotta imagine that he has a shot against this version of N'Dou when you consider all the tough fights Lovemore's been in over the years.

Hatton/Ndou and Mayol/Calderon are poor choices...those should be closely fought fights.

 

Why wouldn't you? He's the mandatory, a **** mandatory but have you ever seen him in action actually? :think

If it is a mismatch, it's gonna be Kessler's 'fault' because he's that good. But Perdomo, who (unlike many think) is not some light punching European guy with a padded record but a hard hitting Venezuelan who actually KO'd former titilist Hector Velazco and only lost two very close decisions to hometown fighters in Mario Veit and Dimitri Sartison. He also stopped the Jose Luis Herrera who KO'd top US cruiser prospect Aaron Willimas and former champion Jorge Castro.

Let's not overlook Perdomo just because Kessler is on a different level and Gusmyl is totally unknown. It's still a legit world title fight and many things have gone wrong in so-called tune-ups in the past. If it's a mismatch, and it's not a guarantee, well, the WBA-WBC unification vs. Markus Beyer and the Librado Andrade fights were mismatches too, and they were legit top fighters.

 

I'm not buying that argument. You're using roundabout examples (he beat Herrera who beat Williams) to legitimize him. If that's the case then you should acknowledge that Kessler easily handled a game Sartison who beat Perdomo. A win over Velazco? Big deal. I didn't see the Veit fight (I live in the states and it wasn't exactly a megafight) but I do know that Perdomo was chosen as his comeback opponent following the loss to Calzaghe so that doesn't really say much about him does it? How dangerous can a guy be if your promoters approve of him for an 8-round comeback fight following a big loss? Surely you want your fighter to get back on track and get some rounds under his belt along with a victory so you're not gonna put him in there with a guy who can foil that. This is only a legit world title fight to the WBA. To the rest of us it's a tune-up for a guy who does exactly what a top fighter is supposed to do in tune-ups and that's end them early. See the Haussler fight for proof. No disrespect to Perdomo but there is nothing on his record to suggest that he deserves to be in a world title fight.

This doesn't make much sense. Who was chosen for who in who's comeback? Kessler returned vs. Sartison in a world title fight and was supposed to face division #3 Mundine before the Aussie gave up the belt. Velazco KO, Herrera KO, very close losses vs. hometown fighters in Veit and Sartison - man, there are so many laughably undeserving challengers out there, but Perdomo has at least some names on the resume when he enters the ring. Who did Andre Dirrell beat for example to challenge Carl Froch? A totally padded and already exposed Oganov? Anyone else with a pulse? No, so you see...

My argument is simple: do not overlook this guy and there won't be a problem. Dare to overlook him, and even a close, bloody fight can KO the Kessler-Ward match-up scheduled just 8 weeks from Perdomo.

Ward is taking a tune-up and the opponent has no chance. Kessler is taking a fight he can win bigtime, but can also lose if he's not careful. That's the different between a tune-up and a half-legitimate, supposedly easy world title challenge.

 

I don't think Kessler will overlook him at all but even then you can't control for things such as cuts or injuries so in that regard, yes the fight is dangerous since it can affect the Ward date. Once again, you're giving credence to wins over guys like Herrera and Velazco. I suppose you can call them quality wins but you'd be doing that solely on the basis of them being somewhat recognizable names rather than legitimate fighters. Velazco was a champion at one point but what does that mean? There are paper chamions littered throughout boxing history and frankly, I can't even remember who he beat to win the title (I'll have to check) and I have a pretty good memory when it comes to title fights. Even obscure ones.
