seeing as a fight with these 2 top guys is a real possibility down the line, I ask this: what role will size and reach advantage play in this fight? Ward is listed as 6'0 with a 71" reach, while Kovalev is 6'0 and supposedly has a reach of 72 1/2 "

would height and reach play a big factor if these 2 fought, or is it more down to skill, speed, timing, footwork? :think

Reach advantage + a good jab is always a factor.

All things being equal they are advantages, in fighting on the outside...

But, as seen in Ward vs Froch, foot speed, hand speed, the ability to fight inside, defense, etc, they can easily(or not so easily) be overcome.

Ward hasn´t fought against fast guy who has a good jab. Kessler was closest to that. I think style wise Ward will get his ass handed to him by Kovalev. Kovalev knows how to use his jab and he is faster than people give him credit for. GGG is a different story because he has the jab but lacks reach at 168.

    Kovalev isn't fast.

Ward has a considerable advantage in the hand speed department.

Kovalve has a reach advantage will be key because he has a good jab. This fight is a lot closer than I thought it would be a year ago that's for sure. Kovalev has underrated boxing ability and has a good ring IQ. Stylistically he matches up very well with Ward. I might even pick him if these two ever meet.

I can't believe someone just said Kovalev doesn't have a good jab! :verysad

    Ridiculous this forum.

I strongly favor Kovalev here to KO Ward. The man is impressive and straight schooled Hopkins for 12 rounds. He almost knocked him out in the 12th too, as the icing on top.

In the match-up for Kovalev/Ward, people thought Kovalev would lose if it went 12 rounds. Crazy how it ended up happening.

Kovalev has a functional jab. I don't consider it to be a good jab. It's slow and has no snap on it. He generally uses it as a range finder to setup his big shots. Take away his jab and he's basically disarmed...
