    Where you at?

It has now been 15 months (plus a week) since he defeated Tervel Pulev in his comeback 2½ years after being stopped by Canelo Álvarez. Nothing scheduled, and I can't even remember the last time his name was linked to a rumored match-up, or negotiations for one.

The hellacious punching (but surprisingly humble about it; "I'm just a regular boxer") 40 year old Russian isn't officially retired, stubbornly insisting that he still has unfinished business in the sport - but he keeps moving the goalposts. When on the comeback trail in 2018 following back to back losses to Andre Ward - but prior to being upset by Eleider Álvarez in their first meeting - he swore that he would never retire until becoming a 4 belt unified champ (he peaked at 3, never capturing the famous green belt of the WBC), quite ambitiously. Last year after taking his UD over Pulev, he set a comparatively modest target for himself and said that he wouldn't retire until tasting championship gold once more.

But... to do that you have to stay in contention, maintain your ranking, be active...

40 is maybe tail end of prime for a HW, and yes LHW is nearer that neighborhood than, say flyweight (where 40 means it's curtains for you), but still. Dude. Get a ****ing move on. Fight already.

He won't be back. Unfortunately. The slimy side of boxing is what ruined a great boxer.

It’s unfortunate how his career played out. I believe he is an ATG level light heavyweight, but it’s hard to make that claim with how things went after Ward 1, and being robbed of victory in that fight.

Seemed to lose his heart in the second fight, and the way he looked after (and especially against Canelo) has seemed to verify that.

The last person he called out directly was Canelo for a rematch, and that was a week before he fought Tervel Pulev. Radio silence now since last May.

The last person to call him out, at least publicly claiming they wanted Kovalev next, was Chris Billam-Smith. But talk is cheap and that itself was nearly a year ago (mid-September of 2022) with nothing coming to fruition.

I believe Kovalev is a traveling salesman for Russian Standard vodka. Maybe catch him for some samples next time he stops in Total Wine.

Too bad he was forced into a fight with Canelo after the tough fight he had against Yarde. He was not allowed enough rest or long enough training camp. This is very similar to what Canelo did to Callum Smith among others and why Canelo is a fraud.

He will be back, he needs money.

I think he will fight at the end of the year with mid CW.

I would like to see Kovalev vs Jack right now

He posted this on his IG last week:

Little paunchy but at least he's training.

Of course, somebody in the comments asked "who's your next opponent" and his reply was a shrug emoji. So, this is just keeping in shape for the sake of "just in case", not because anything is already in the works.

I was reminded of Kovalev by the recent Crawford-Spence fight. I haven't seen a fighter commit to a power jab the way Crawford did and be as effective with it since prime Kovalev was on a tear. Very different fighters, but mechanically they sometimes look similar. Both have the tendency of finishing a combo with a power jab which you don't see too often.

Just rewatched Kovalev-Ward II. I remembered it as a tit for tat encounter that was closer than the first until Kovalev gassed, Ward landed a right hand, and the low blow stoppage happened. Upon rewatching it was actually dominant by Kovalev until the round it ended. Ward never figured out the Krusher jab. He has two official wins though (one being a consensus robbery and the other eating jabs until a vodka soaked Sergey gassed and succumbed to the ugliest TKO in history), so good for him. I still don't think he was able to separate himself whatsoever from Kovalev in terms of boxing ability.

Would be fun to see him vs. Gvozdyk at this point if they can agree on a weight.
