Calzaghe was one of my favorite fighters, but he would had to have the prefect fight to outlast Kovalev, he would have been outbunned, but a fight with Ward....................I would give Calzaghe would have out pointed Ward.............

What happens if Ward beats Kovalev? What would your opinion be then?

Ward has already put to shame most of today's boxers by taking on the most feared guy out there so in my book he's already a winner, should he pull it off though having gone up a weight class and with the likes of Mayweather saying he's basically crazy for doing this then he will go down as one of the very best of the modern era if not the best.
Paulie m says it will be better for boxing should Ward win cause if he loses it will only endorse the modern way of making money whilst not risking much, say what you like about Ward but he does seem to care more about his record than making money.

I'd rate Kovalev higher than Calzaghe if he beats Ward this weekend. I think it'll be a no-brainer if he goes on and beats Stevenson to unify the divisions.

As far as H2H? While Calzaghe did become champion at LHW during his brief stint there, he didn't take on anyone with Kovalev's power. I think Joe's defense is a little bit underrated, but he would eventually get tagged in that matchup. He's not that elusive to the point where he can avoid getting hit with any significant for a full 12. I also have my doubts that his punches will have any type of effect on someone like Kovalev.

It's not a fair matchup. At 175, Joe only fought the shell of Jones Jr and a past his prime Hopkins (who I admit was still a very good fighter, but I wouldn't consider him a stalwart at the 175 division.) In their primes, Kovalev is just too strong for Calzaghe and would stop him at some point.
