Prime Kovalev was a H2H monster at LHW. Too bad he got a late start to his pro career. He wasn't even getting paid for most of his prime. One of the best left jabs I have ever seen. Incredible timing and accuracy. Awesome straight right hand. Great killer instinct and finishing capability. He was basically a far superior, far more skilled LHW version of a prime Kelly Pavlik. He's mostly remembered for his two bouts with Andre Ward. The first one where he was robbed blind by dubious home cooking. But for us true fans who remember the less glamourous part of his career, that's where he truly shined. Before the alcohol and depression and age took hold of him. One of the best H2H at 175 ever. I believe that. This content is protected
I agree. The people that pick Bivol and Beterbiev to beat him obviously didn’t see him in his prime and just saw the end of his career Kovalev. In his prime he was more powerful than both and a solid all-round boxer. Would have stopped Beterbiev and beat Bivol on points, maybe dropping him along the way.
One of the best boxer punchers the sport has ever seen. Beat a prime Andre Ward in his back yard. Couldn't keep it together mentally, but in his prime I'd pick him over all the current LHW's.
He had such deceiving power! They didn’t look fierce, but he’d graze fighters and they’d crumble. A shame he never fought Stevenson.
He out-boxed or at the very least matched Ward boxing wise. And Ward was considered the best boxer. He was as Cleverly said, a ''massive puncher'', and Cleverly was used to absorbing big punches to the head. So you put those together and you have Krusher. He was also a funny guy who entertained us with realistic statements about society. He was the secret love of Kathy Duva, though it was never to be. They were from different worlds and different generations. And who can forget him crawling out of a shrub with a vodka bottle in the backyard of a random instagram tart? Just for a laugh. Krusher made the world a better place.
Like a lot of these 'Eastern European' fighters a few years ago they weren't given much backing as they were coming through and when they finally did breakthrough they got shafted .. there is a generation of former Soviet fighters that have been incredible (a massive asset to the sport) who's legacies have been taken away from them somewhat.. Salido should've been disqualified versus Loma… Golovkin and Kovalev were both screwed as well… i mean you literally have Americans being handed belts LOL… Look at Haney.. and we are supposed to believe in a certain type of privilege .. Kovalev for a period of 3 to 4 years was exceptional and a pound for pound talent, he is my favourite fighter of the past 10 years or so but his out of ring issues and personal life and discipline have chipped away at him… it's just a lack of professionalism and focus which athletes need to maintain longevity, he's been up and down now for years.. as amazing as he was he could've been even greater… I look at him as sort of a Sergio Martinez type fighter , but he had the potential to be greater .. he wont be now, some his own doing .. some others... was a blast following his run and truly one of the most talented fighters I've seen in recent years, it's a shame his later career will taint it.. a damn shame too that he never fought Stevenson, that will always be one of those fights people will talk about.. so many ifs regarding his career…
Was a tremendous fighter in his prime, very exciting. Though I was actually okay with the scırecards in Ward-Kovalev I and I think I would give the edge Beterbiev over him prime vs prime.
