I think the difference is Canelo recognised he was schooled. Kovalev was robbed.

No doubt Kovalev was robbed. However, he should have had better mental resolve to come back even stronger and put matters right. Instead he went on a drinking binge, lost his discipline and had a chip on his shoulder.

Smart boxers adjust. This is not just about talent. You have to be aware of the political beast you are fighting too.

Maybe but put yourself in his position. He needed a knockout for a draw. Don't blame him for losing faith in the sport.

Kovalev's robbery is nothing near Canelo's loss. Canelo came close to losing 12-0 vs Floyd and made out with 6-6, 8-4, and 9-3. One judge scored it correctly. Kovalev on the other hand, was robbed. When looking forward, having the officials on your side is going to give a very different mindset than having them against you.

Imagine a three-belt unified champion affords you the golden opportunity to win all three of their belts from them in one fell swoop in your home country with a home ref and three home judges , three belts they had to make enormous sacrifices and work so hard for, including uprooting and leaving their home country to try and forge a career for themselves and then having to fight for free for three years and 18 fights in total because no promoter would sign them, and then after your three home judges (and of course your obligatory home ref to allow you to fight to your own set of rules) robbed them blind of all their world titles you refuse to allow them a single neutral judge for the rematch so once again you have a full set of home officials, which had already been an extremely consistent theme for you even for your world title fights against foreigners, to stitch them up again in the rematch.

When Kovalev defended his world title (s) in Russia against Chilemba and Yarde every single one of the officials in both fights were from neutral countries. Hmm..

''Kovalev did it the hard way''

--Dre on Kovalev fighting on the road and in his opponent's backyards, which of course a certain someone categorically refused to ever do.. do it ''the hard way'' that is

Russians have to do it the hard way because that's the only path for them. Kovalev's prime was wasted fighting for zero money, Bivol was sidelined by Hearn for years, Beterbiev had promoter issues etc etc etc

Now we got all the politiical stuff going on with Ukraine and Russia and Western countries have shown their bias. Dont be surprised if Russian fighters suddenly start popping "dirty" all of a sudden too.

The game is rigged, but as long as you have the faculties to know what's going on you can come out ahead. This was Kovalev's biggest mistake - expecting fair shake in America against an American darling.
